NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Heading back to the conference championship for the tenth consecutive season, the top-seeded Christopher Newport women's tennis team will face #2 UC Santa Cruz in the 2025 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship following a 4-0 blanking of #4 Salisbury on Saturday. The Captains swept the Sea Gulls after getting two wins from
Raine Weis and
Kylie Schaefer in the semifinal round to lead the way.
Taking on Salisbury for the second straight match on a sweltering Spring afternoon at the James T. and Sarah C. Eyre Courts, the Captains wasted little time in advancing back to the conference title match. CNU secured the doubles point quickly, with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, with the No. 2 match on the brink of a doubles sweep. In singles play, Schaefer, Weis, and
Kendal Chang earned wins for CNU after surrendering just six games combined.
In doubles play, the nationally-ranked tandem of Schaefer and Weis continued its dominant 2025 season with a 6-2 win at No. 1 for the first victory of the afternoon. The duo improved to a team-best 15-4 and became just the fifth tandem in program history to reach 15 wins at No. 1 in a single season. Moments later,
Lindsey Bergelin and
Erin Gross combined for the win at No. 3, 6-0, and the Captains secured the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead.
Moving into singles, Schaefer breezed through the bout at No. 2, dropping just a single game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Olivia Hall. Pulling CNU within one victory of clinching, rookie
Kendal Chang downed Lily Muir at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1, and the Captains had a 3-0 lead.
On the top line, nationally-ranked
Raine Weis faced off against Gibelle Beaujon and clinched the match for Christopher Newport. She won the first set, 6-2, and sealed the semifinal victory with a 6-1 second set. She improved to 17-4 overall this season with a 14-2 mark at No. 1, moving her into a tie for fourth with Johanna Ranta-aho on the single season chart at Christopher Newport. She is now tied with Lindsey Pantele (2006-08) for seventh all-time with 54 career singles victories while also tying Amy Lawrence (1989-92) for third all-time with 35 wins at the No. 1 position.
Christopher Newport will look to defend its conference crown on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. against the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz. It marks the first time in 19 years the conference tournament has been held that Mary Washington will not compete for the conference title. UC Santa Cruz earned its first ever C2C Tournament victory with a 4-0 shutout against the Eagles in the other semifinal matchup on Saturday.
