Four CNU Men's Tennis Players Recognized as Academic All-District Selections

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced the 2024-25 Academic All-District selections for men's tennis on Tuesday listing four Christopher Newport Captains among the honorees. The four CNU players -- Ashton Legum, Ryan Monroe, Edvard Porsmyr Hansen, and Vincent Truong -- are all repeat selections for the Captains this season.

Porsmyr Hansen and Legum make history for Christopher Newport as three-time Academic All-District selections. They join an elite list of former Captains to accomplish the feat three times in their career, adding to a list that includes Aimee Gibbs (2002-04), Carson Pokorny (2018-20), Zoe Stauffer (2019-21), Dylan Rice (2020-22), Abby Asuncion (2022-24), Adrianna DeSantis (2021-23), Daniel Ferrante (2022-24), and Raine Weis (2023-25). Monroe and Truong were each selected last season and become just the third and fourth winners of the prestigious honor more than once in men's tennis history at CNU.

The foursome were a major factor in the Captains having a banner season on the courts in 2024-25 as Christopher Newport is ranked No. 17 in the nation in the most recent ITA National Rankings after capturing the second conference championship since joining the league in 2013-14. The Captains upended Mary Washington, now ranked No. 22 in the nation, in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship, 4-2, to hoist the conference trophy.

Legum and Truong paired up to earn C2C Doubles Team of the Year honors after winning 10 matches together this season. The duo won eight matches at No. 1 doubles, including a pivotal win against the Eagles in the conference title match that helped lift CNU to victory. One day prior, the CNU tandem also earned a huge win against a regionally-ranked pairing from Salisbury to help the Captains advance to the finals.

In Legum's final season, he also clinched the championship for CNU with a win in singles play for a dramatic finish. A second team All-C2C selection in singles, Legum wrapped up his career a four-time All-Conference selection while serving as team captain. He will graduate with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Truong added first team All-Conference honors in singles and doubles as the 2024 Conference Player of the Year played entirely at No. 1 this season and recorded seven wins. That included a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory in the conference final against a regionally-ranked opponent while he also added a win over a nationally-ranked opponent earlier int he Spring. Truong is working toward a degree in Computer Engineering and will return for his senior season next year.

Ryan Monroe was a second team All-Conference pick in singles this year after ranked second on the team in wins with 15. He played across the top three positions in duals and captured 10 wins. Majoring in Business Administration in Finance, Monroe concluded his career as a Captain this year following his junior year.

Finally, Edvard Porsmyr Hansen wrapped up a storied five-year tenure with the Captains and was selected as the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's tennis. After leading the team in wins with 18, including a 10-2 mark at No. 2, 3 and 4, he earned second team All-Conference honors in singles. His on-court prowess was matched by another standout year in the classroom as he earned his undegraduate degree in Finance and will graduate with a Master's in Financial Analysis. The five-time All-Conference pick closed his career with 62 career wins, marking the most by a Captain since 2012 when Eric Shulman set the program record with 86 victories.
