NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team cruised by the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins (4-6) on Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 win at home on the Eyre Courts. With the win, the Captains improved to 8-6 overall this season after capturing the team's fourth straight victory.
CNU earned the win in less than three hours at the Eyre Courts on a sunny Spring afternoon after dropping just a single set to the Marlins.
The Captains rolled through doubles play with just seven games surrendered, winning 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 from 1-3. At No. 1, the nationally-ranked tandem of
Raine Weis and
Kylie Schaefer closed out a 6-3 win against Tuva Fink and Jette Hafermann; at No. 2, it was
Kendal Chang and
Samantha Robertson with a 6-2 win against Mikisha Thomas and Zoe Vliegen, and; the No. 3 tandem of
Erin Gross and
Lindsey Bergelin defeated Lina Hackner and Sarah Reich by a score of 6-2.
Moving into singles play, Gross and Weis earned quick wins at No. 6 and No. 1, respectively. The rookie played at No. 6 and earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Thomas while the senior posted a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 against Fink. With the match just one point away from team victory, Schaefer clinched the bout with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 against Vliegen.
Robertson and Bergelin each capped 2-0 days for the Captains while
Eva Taylor stepped in at No. 3 singles and earned the final win of the day for CNU. Robertson defeated Hafermann (6-4, 6-3) at No. 4 and Bergelin earned a win over Reich (6-4, 6-1). Taylor closed out the shut out with a win over Lina Hackner (6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5)).
Weis hauled in her 50th career singles victory to tie Amanda Riley (1998-01) for the eighth most in program history. Thirty-one of those 50 have come at the No. 1 position in dual play, ranking fourth all-time.
A second match originally scheduled for Saturday evening against North Carolina Wesleyan was canceled earlier in the week. Christopher Newport will next hit the road for three matches as they travel to Haverford College (April 11), Swarthmore College (April 12), and Washington (Md.) (April 13).
