The Captains were last in action on Saturday when the squad knocked off Kean, 18-7. Against the Cougars,
Kevin Miller posted eight points, including six assists. His six helpers equaled the fouth-most in program history. Meanwhile, that outing also marked his 16th consecutive appearance with at least one assist dating back to last year. That stands as the longest streak in program history, topping former All-American
Coby Auslander's 15-game roll from April 8, 2023 through March 2, 2024.
Aided by his performance against Kean, Miller now has 52 assists this year, which ranks second in the NCAA. It also places him two away from tying Auslander's single-season program record of 54 set in 2023.
Along with Miller's work over the weekend,
Warner Cabaniss won 15 of his 16 faceoffs against the Cougars. The three-time All-American captured 13 straight battles to open the game, which equaled the fifth-longest streak in school history. He also hauled in 14 ground balls, tying the sixth-highest total by a Captain. For that performance, he was named the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Continuing to climb up the NCAA's all-time charts, Cabaniss now ranks eighth in Division III history with 1,018 career faceoff victories and 13th with 638 ground balls.
So far this season, Christopher Newport stands fifth in the nation in man-up offense (.519 conversion rate), ninth in takeaways-per-game (13.27), 12th in scoring offense (16.27 goals-per-game), and 17th in faceoff percentage (.659).
On Saturday against Kean, CNU continued to flash a well-balanced attack as 13 Captains collected at least one point. That group included
Garrett Bralley, who became the 36th different player to notch a point this season after registering his first career assist in the fourth quarter. Only the 2022 squad had a more diverse attack as 38 players notched a point over the course of that 20-game season.
Mary Washington comes to town after a weeklong layoff following a 14-6 setback at No. 2 Salisbury last Wednesday. That loss snapped a five-game winning streak. Despite the stumble, the Eagles still rank 12th in the nation in ground balls-per-game (41.54), 17th in takeaways-per-contest (12.62), and 32nd in faceoff percentage (.626).
On an individual level, reigning All-American Keegan Shipe ranks 12th in the country with a 2.85 takeaways-per-game rate. Jacob Fowler also sits in the top-40 nationally with a .632 faceoff percentage. On the offensive end, Henry Moag leads the squad with 38 points, while Dave Votapek has a team-high 25 goals, including five hat-tricks.
In 21 previous meetings between the two programs, CNU holds a 12-9 lead in the series. Last year, the Captains notched a 17-3 win in Fredericksburg, including hat-tricks by Miller and
Brett Jackson.
Following Wednesday's match-up, Christopher Newport will cap off the regular season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. test at Stockton.
