CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team picked up win number ten on the season with a 6-1 victory on the road Sunday afternoon as the Captains (10-7) downed Washington College (Md.). CNU swept doubles and cruised through singles action with the lone loss coming by retirement.
In pairs play, the Captains' nationally-ranked tandem of
Raine Weis and
Kylie Schaefer rebounded from just their second duals loss on Saturday and rolled to a 6-1 win against Eva Kading and Soleil Namunyola on Sunday. With the win on the top line secured, CNU also captured a 6-1 win at No. 2 where
Kendal Chang and
Samantha Robertson defeated Sofia Sperandei and Carrie Lord. Finally,
Erin Gross and
Eva Taylor took down Isabella Sorhegui and Gaby Coutts, 6-2, at No. 3.
With the doubles point in hand, CNU moved on to singles and worked quickly to the team-clinching point. The CNU players did not surrender more than five games in any one match.
At No. 1, Weis defeated Namunyola by a final score of 6-3, 6-1. Schaefer added a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win against Kading at No. 2. Chang followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 versus Sorhegui.
Washington College counted the point at No. 4 as
Eva Taylor was unable to continue during the first set. The other two matches went CNU's way, however, as Robertson downed Coutts at No. 5, 6-2, 6-0, and Gross took down Sperandei, 6-4, 6-1.
Christopher Newport will close out the regular season on Friday, April 18 as the Captains host Randolph College at 5:00 p.m. for Senior Day.
