Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

No. 21 CNU Men's Tennis Falls at No. 18 Haverford College, 6-1

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- Despite a doubles sweep on Saturday evening, the 21st-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team suffered a 6-1 setback on the road against 18th-ranked Haverford College (11-2). The Captains fall to 10-6 after the match.

Forced to move the match indoors due to inclement weather, the teams played at the Alumni Field House at Haverford College and got through the head-to-head bout in just over three-and-a-half hours. For the sixth time this Spring, the Captains won in all three doubles pairings but the Fords rebounded by sweeping singles for the win.

Christopher Newport started off strong, earning a 6-3 win on the top line in a matchup against the regional foe. Paired up with Ashton Legum, junior Vincent Truong downed Justin Minerva and James McKenzie for the first win of the day. CNU then secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3 where Alex Seretis and Rainer Christiansen defeated Zach Miano and Teo Bortan.

Wrapping up the dominant doubles effort, Edvard Porsmyr Hansen and Gabe Smith landed a 6-3 win over Marko Arboleda and Owen Kilmer and CNU took a 1-0 lead into singles play.

Haverford scored the first three wins in singles play to threaten to clinch the team victory. The remaining matches were all stretched to a third set, including the clinching victory at No. 1 for the home team. Truong took on Marko Arbodela and forced a third set with a 6-2 win in the second, but Arbodela held on for a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 win to take the victory for the Fords.

The remaining matches included hard-fought losses for Christiansen and Smith at No. 5 and 6 where both Captains won the first set against their opponent. Christiansen took on Minerva and suffered a 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) loss at No.5  while Smith dropped a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) matchup against Chait Krishna at No. 6.

CNU will look to bounce back on Sunday against another formidable opponent as the Captains head to No. 13 Swarthmore College at 11:00 a.m.
