DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Competing at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) College Nationals for the second straight year, the Christopher Newport competition cheerleading squad captured a third-place finish in the Intermediate All-Girl Division III category following the finals on Friday.

The Captains scored a 94.6528 for a spot on the podium behind the 2025 champion University of New England squad with a 96.3195 and second-place Piedmont University with a 94.8079. CNU, the defending champions in the Intermediate All-Girl category, appeared in the NCA College Nationals for just the second time and earned a top-three finish among the 16-team field. 

CNU ranked second after the pre-lims on Thursday with a raw score of 85.4 and a deduction of 0.75; in Friday's finals, the Captains added an 86.4667 raw score, including a 1.25-point deduction that slid the squad to third place overall. Without the deduction, the Captains' score was the highest recorded in the category on Friday. The pre-lims were 25 percent of the total event score and the finals performance accounted for 75 percent. 

Performances are graded in multiple categories with stunts, pyramid skills, tosses, standing tumbling, and running tumbling all included in the scoring by NCA College judges.

CNU earned Cheer Ltd. College Open National Championships in 2014 and in each year from 2017-19. Following the CoVID-19 pandemic, the Captains committed to attending the NCA College Nationals for the first time in 2024 and were rewarded with the first NCA National Championship in program history.
