No. 22 CNU Women's Lacrosse Grabs Double-Digit Halftime Lead before Rolling to 14-6 Triumph at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Snatching a double-digit lead before halftime, the 22nd-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team eased into its third road victory of the season as the Captains toppled Ursinus, 14-6, during a non-conference test on Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field.

Headlining the lethal assault, Drew Stanley recorded a career-high four goals, while Maelyn Eversole chipped in with five points, including four assists. Equally effective on the attack, Kate Lamendola added a pair of daggers, and Grace Taylor collected three points of her own.

On the defensive end, Hadley Chadwick matched her season-high with nine saves and notched a slick interception on an errant pass in the second period.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improved to 4-2 on the season, while Ursinus dropped to 1-4.

Jumping out to a quick lead, Eversole led CNU's early assault. Kicking off the action, she dropped a dime from the left corner to Stanley, who caught the feed in traffic and launched a high-to-high hammer on the move. Moments later, she sank her sixth goal of the season after cutting across the face of the cage before connecting along the right post.

Just over a minute later, after Ursinus' goalie made a solid save on a free-position attempt by Taylor, Elena Sorkin burst in from the right side and collected the trash. Securing the rebound, she golfed a low-liner past the keeper for a 3-0 lead.

After Ursinus answered in the middle of the period, Christopher Newport fired back. Taylor found Stanley streaking down the center for her second assist of the quarter before Morrison drew the attention of an off-ball defender as Lamendola slipped inside, grabbed a pass, and landed the squad's fifth goal.

Meanwhile, on the defensive end, the Captains locked down the Ursinus attack. On an early run by the hosts, Lamendola cut off a shooting lane before Maddie Rusinko stormed in and clubbed the ball loose. Shortly thereafter, Rusinko came back with a leaping deflection at the top of the zone before Stanley pounced on the roller and cleared the field.

In the second stanza, Christopher Newport unloaded on the Bears. First, from the eight-meter arc, Taylor skipped a shot into the back of the net before Faith O'Connor buried one in the top left corner. Shortly thereafter, Henry won a one-on-one match-up in the right alley. Dodging a defender, she cut back to her right, sidestepped a Bear, ducked inside, and connected on the doorstep.

Holding a 8-1 lead, Lamendola landed her second strike of the half before Eversole pushed the advantage to double-digits after carving up the defense. In the 24th minute, she burned down the left alley and dropped a rainbow over a pair of defenders, which Stanley grabbed and converted for her third goal. Moments later, Eversole came back and ran a gorgeous give-and-go with Emily Snyder, which gave the visitors an 11-1 lead.

Looking for a little more room just before the break, Brookelyn Morrison painted the right post with a missile off an eight-meter attempt to snatch an 11-goal lead entering halftime.

In the second half, Christopher Newport continued its assault. Less than two minutes into the third period, Emilie Shoults found Maddie Lamy, who rolled underneath a defender and sniped along the right post.

Although Ursinus responded with two straight tallies to pull back within 10, CNU retaliated on the defensive end. Jess Hulse had a great ride around the right post while forcing a shooter to launch an off-kilter attempt that sailed past the pipe. Moments later, Lexi Larson rode a cutter down the center of the zone and caused a bad pass to skip off the turf, which Carys May secured to kill off the period.

Still staring at a 10-goal deficit entering the final frame, Ursinus inched back into the contest with three late strikes, but Christopher Newport was undeterred. In the 49th minute, Stanley dotted the top left corner of the cage with her fourth tally of the contest. Then, the defense put the game on ice.

Chadwick swallowed three late shots, while Gabby Saia punctuated a lengthy rally by the hosts after collecting a loose ball and clearing the defensive end. Later, Eversole put on a show with an incredible individual effort. On a clear attempt by the hosts, a Bear had a 10-yard headstart on Eversole, but the senior speedster flashed her wheels, caught up to the play, and disrupted a pass before grabbing the ground ball and killing the surge near midfield, which helped punctuate the victory.

Overall, Christopher Newport held a 29-18 advantage in shots and a 12-9 lead in ground balls. Saia and Chadwick both had a pair of rollers, while Stanley had two takeaways. Meanwhile, both squads controlled a dozen draws, including four by Madi Rozgonyi and three apiece by Morrison and Shoults.

CNU will return to action on Wednesday when the Captains host Gettysburg at 3 p.m.
