The contest, which was rescheduled after a winter storm swept through Virginia on February 19, will serve as the latest edition of the Virginia LtN Cup. The annual meeting between the Captains and Generals is used to promote Lacrosse the Nations, which is an international organization that utilizes lacrosse to improve the lives of children across the world.
Monday's game will be the eighth annual Virginia LtN Cup with the Captains holding a 5-2 edge. CNU has won the previous four meetings, while the two programs have split the last four showdowns that were held at Wilson Field.
Coming into the game, both squads boast similar résumés while playing difficult schedules. Christopher Newport has three victories over teams currently ranked in the top-25 after previously dispatching No. 7 Gettysburg, No. 12 Stevenson, and No. 14 Lynchburg. Meanwhile, the Generals hold wins against No. 16 York and No. 18 Dickinson. During the Mustang Classic, Washington and Lee also took down St. Lawrence, who is currently receiving votes in the national poll.
CNU and W&L also sit among the NCAA leaders in several statistical categories. The Generals are third in faceoff percentage (.748) and 21st in scoring offense (15.00 goals-per-game), while the Captains rank 12th at the dot (.684) and seventh on the attack (16.58 goals-per-game). Additionally, Washington and Lee is averaging just 14.90 turnovers per game, which ranks sixth in the NCAA, while Christopher Newport is third in takeaways-per-contest (14.00).
On an individual level,
Jamie Smith is fourth in the country with nine man-up goals, and
Kevin Miller is sixth with a 3.42 assists-per-game average.
Warner Cabaniss is also 21st in faceoff percentage (.685). Meanwhile, on the back line,
Mark Davison is averaging two caused turnovers per game, while
Rory Keverline has a pair of strips in each of his last two appearances.
For the Generals, Tyler Spano is sixth in the nation with a .734 faceoff percentage and ninth with a 10.67 ground balls-per-game rate. Hillis Burns is also 28th in assists-per-game (2.50), while Nick De Cain has a 10.46 goals-against-average.
In a series that dates back to 2012, CNU and Washington and Lee have met 12 total times with both squads capturing six victories apiece. Last year, the Captains came away with a 12-8 win in Newport News. Miller had two goals for the victors in that contest, while Spano went 15-for-23 on faceoffs for W&L.
Following Monday's tilt, Christopher Newport will remain on the road for a clash at No. 2 Salisbury on Saturday at 1 p.m.
