MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team is set to take on three foes over the next three days at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as the Captains (5-3) open Spring Break on the road. CNU will take on Manchester University, Saint Elizabeth University, and Neumann University before returning to campus for six straight.
The schedule affords Christopher Newport the opportunity to play some new opponents as it will be the first ever matchup against Manchester and Saint Elizabeth. CNU has faced Neumann only twice prior to this weekend with a 2-0 record against the Knights.
The Manchester Spartans are making the trek to the beach from North Manchester, Indiana and enter Saturday's matchup with a 1-1 overall record. First pitch is slated for Noon with no live stats or live video available.
On Sunday, CNU will take on the Eagles of Saint Elizabeth from Morristown, New Jersey. Opening the season with a 1-2 record, Saint Elizabeth and Christopher Newport will face off at the Ebbets Field replica with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
Finally, the Captains will open the Neumann baseball season at the Griffith Field replica at the Ripken Experience. First pitch against the Knights is slated for 11:00 a.m. as Christopher Newport wraps up their trip to the Palmetto State.
CNU is coming off a 12-10 win at Bridgewater on Wednesday afternoon that saw the Captains rope six extra-base hits and record 19 total base hits. Through the first eight games this season, the Captains are being led by
Jake Benedict with a .441 average on 15 hits out of the leadoff spot. He has already scored 11 times and leads the squad with a 4-4 effort on the basepaths. Sophomore catcher
Cameron Slough is right behind him, hitting .438 in five starts while
Sam Benedict has added 11 hits in 28 at-bats for a .393 average.
Sam Benedict has driven in a team-high 10 runs while scoring nine times himself.
On the mound, Christopher Newport has gotten three starts from
Cooper Newell (1-1) and two apiece from
Jackson Baird (0-1), and
Chase Hustead (0-1).
Ryan Morrison (2-0) earned the start against Bridgewater and has 12 strikeouts in 11.1 innings pitched for CNU while primarily working out of the bullpen this season. Newell, Baird, and Hustead have combined for 25 strikeouts in 28 innings pitched.
After the trip to South Carolina, the team will return to Captains Park for six straight starting with a 2:00 p.m. first pitch against Roanoke on Wednesday, March 5. CNU will also face Hartford (March 7), Penn State Harrisburg (March 8), William Peace (March 11), and Coast Guard (March 12) in the run.
