SALISBURY, Md. - The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament begins Friday afternoon at the Maggs Center on the campus of Salisbury University. Christopher Newport University is the top seed, and the Captains open play vs. the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz, the fourth seed, at 2:00 p.m. Salisbury and Mary Washington will meet in the other semifinal game on Friday at 4:30 p.m., and the winners of the games will tangle on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. for the championship.
John Krikorian's Captains are 21-4 and have won their last seven games, as well as 12 of their last 13. CNU is ranked eighth in the nation, and the Captains are looking for their fourth straight C2C title since the league was formed. Christopher Newport ended the regular season with a 72-58 victory at Mary Washington last Saturday as fifth-year senior
Jahn Hines poured in 32 points. Hines, a three-time All-American, was named the Player of the Year in the C2C earlier this week, and is just 14 points away from 2,000 for his career. The Player of the Year honor was the third for
Jahn Hines, who moved into second place behind Lamont Strothers on CNU's all-time scoring list.Â
Two other Captains received honors this week from the C2C. Sophomore
Toa Hollenbeck was named first team All-Conference, and junior
Collin Hines received second team recognition. Last Saturday's victory was the 400th career win for Krikorian, who has led the Captains for the last 14 years and was named the Coach of the Year by the C2C on Wednesday. Krikorian is now 400-118 (.772) overall over 18 seasons, and 335-76 (.815) leading the Captains.Â
Christopher Newport and UC Santa Cruz will be meeting for the second time this season. The Captains defeated the Slugs at the Freeman Center on February 1st, by a score of 76-57. UCSC has a record of 12-12 heading into the tourney. The schools have met eight times in the all-time series, with CNU holding a 7-1 advantage.Â
