Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team suffered a pair of losses at the D3Showcase on Saturday as the Captains (4-2) dropped a 13-4 decision to No. 4 Denison University in the opener before falling to Marietta College, 9-1, in the second game of the day.
Full and complete statistics from the game have not yet been verified and will be available at CNUsports.com in the coming days.
In the first game of the day, the Captains offense was dormant until the sixth inning when
Jake Benedict and
Sam Benedict notched back-to-back singles to kickstart a rally. Trailing 8-0 in the game at the time, Christopher Newport looked to cut into the lead against the nationally-ranked opponent when
Josh Reinhold grounded to the right side and reached on an error by the first baseman to load the bases.
Taking advantage of the miscue, the Captains scored all three of the aforementioned players. The first run came in when
Aaron Maxie singled into left field to plate
Jake Benedict; then, his brother
Sam Benedict raced home moments later on a single through the left side by
Ayden Stuffel. After a pitching change,
Cameron Slough delivered an RBI single into left field to plate Reinhold and Maxie also sprinted home on a mishandled play by the outfielder.
Unfortunately for the CNU offense, though, it would be all they could muster against a solid overall pitching performance by the Big Red. Nick Falter (1-0) earned the win with seven strikeouts over 5.2 innings pitched before three relievers combined to finish out the final 3.1 scoreless.
Cooper Newell (1-1) suffered the loss for CNU on the mound.
In game two, the Captains were pit against perennial power Marietta and struggled to keep the Pioneers off the basepaths. The Express scored runs in six of their eight innings while CNU crossed home plate just once in the top of the eighth.
That CNU run would come around when the first two batters reached for the Captains as
Sam Benedict reached on an error and Reinhold pounded a double into center field. With two in scoring position, and one out,
Aaron Maxie walked to load the bases to give Stuffel a chance for another RBI. The junior outfielder smacked a high fly ball to deep left field and earned a sacrifice fly for Christopher Newport's run-scoring play.
In the game,
Doc Daniels finished 2-for-3 while Reinhold added a two-double performance in four at-bats.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday afternoon as the Captains take on nationally-ranked Cortland at 2:00 p.m. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
