OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The fifth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will face its first top-20 test of the season when the Captains travel to No. 18 Stevenson for a non-conference showdown at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Mustang Stadium.
Entering the weekend, both squads sit at 2-0 on the year. Saturday will be CNU's first road trip of the season, while Stevenson is 1-0 at home.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at GoMustangSports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport was last in action on February 15 when the squad knocked off Adrian, 22-9. Against the Bulldogs, the Captains controlled possession while winning 30 of the game's 35 faceoffs. The 30 victories marked the third-most in program history. On an individual level, three-time All-American
Warner Cabaniss went 19-for-21 while collecting 10 ground balls. His 90 percent success rate was the second-highest by a Captain with at least 20 attempts in school history.
Along with his work on faceoffs, Cabaniss was one of 18 players to register at least one goal in the game. Receiving contributions from a wide variety of standouts, CNU also picked up strikes from fellow faceoff specialist
Grant Giunchi and long-stick midfielder
AJ Rosacker. Meanwhile,
Fred Fulkerson,
Jackson Platner,
Logan Shassian, and
Jamie Smith all had two tallies apiece.
Overall, the 18 different goal-scorers marked the most in a single game in school history, topping the 17 Captains who found the back of the cage against Stockton on April 15, 2023.
Coupled with the team's 24-8 win in the season opener against Hampden-Sydney on February 8, the 2025 Captains became the first team in program history to open a year with back-to-back 20-goal eruptions. Meanwhile, the team's 23.00 goals-per-game average is currently the fourth-highest in the NCAA this year.
In addition to CNU's nationally-ranked attack, Christopher Newport also slots fourth in the country in takeaways-per-game (21.00), eighth in faceoff percentage (.789), and 12th in ground balls-per-contest (48.00). On an individual level,
Kevin Miller leads the NCAA with a 7.00 assists-per-game rate, including a school-record eight helpers in the opener against HSC.
Along with Miller's historic work on the offensive end, Cabaniss is closing in on history as well. The senior has 862 career faceoff victories. That stands as the second-most among all active players in the nation and places him 21st on the all-time Division III charts. He is just four wins shy of passing former Washington & Lee standout Jack Hodgson for a spot in the top-20.
Stevenson also enters Saturday on a two-game roll, including an 18-6 victory at Muhlenberg on February 14. Max Racich led the Mustangs with seven points, including four goals, while Gavin Gossen had five strikes as well. On the defensive side, Eskander Ben Aissa had three takeaways, while Tyler Merchant made 13 saves in 56 minutes of action.
So far this season, Racich ranks 12th in the NCAA with a 5.00 goals-per-game average, while Darrell Curtis is tied for third with three man-up tallies. As a team, Stevenson is 13th in scoring offense with an 18.50 goals-per-game rate and 14th in shooting percentage with a .402 mark.
In six previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 4-2 edge in the series. Last year, the Captains claimed a 14-9 triumph in Newport News.
Brett Jackson notched three points for the victors, while Cabaniss went 17-for-21 at the dot. Curtis and Racich both had two tallies for the Mustangs.
After Saturday, CNU will kick off a three-game homestand when the Captains host Grove City at noon on March 1.
