NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Continuing a strong start to the spring season, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team captured a shutout victory over Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon, 7-0. The Captains improved to 4-0 while the Hornets dropped their first match of the year.
CNU earned the doubles point with a sweep of the pairs play. At No. 1,
Vincent Truong and
Nesh Kumaresan earned a 6-0 win against Dominick Suwak and Artem Babaiev.
Rainer Christiansen and
Ashton Legum played together at No. 2, downing Jovan Cirkovic and Marvin Kuehnelt, 6-4. Finally, the sweep was complete at No. 3 where
Gabe Smith and
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen earned a 6-2 win.
In singles play, the Captains swept the action again with four of the six players earning their second win of the match. Truong won 6-4, 6-3 on the top line against Suwak; Legum won at No. 3 against Cirkovic 6-2, 6-3; Porsmyr Hansen defeated Shine Tokas at No. 4 6-1, 6-1; Christiansen gave up just three games in a win at No. 5 against Kuehnelt 6-2, 6-1, and; Smith captured a 6-2, 6-2 win against Max Arkans at No. 6.
The remaining victory came from
Ryan Monroe at No. 2, 6-3, 6-1, against Babaiev.
With the win, Christopher Newport improved to 23-1 in singles play this Spring and 11-1 in doubles action. The Captains have won over 95 percent of singles matchups in the first four duals and nearly 92 percent of doubles bouts.
The Captains are scheduled to return to play on the road next weekend at Washington and Lee University. Match time is set for 4:00 pm on Friday, February 21. The Captains will also face Sewanee at 11:00 am on a neutral court on Saturday, February 22.
