NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Wrapping up a brief two-game homestand, the sixth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will host Adrian in a non-conference showdown at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Jennings Family Stadium.

After knocking off Hampden-Sydney in the season opener last Saturday, the Captains enter the contest at 1-0 overall. Meanwhile, Saturday's tilt will mark Adrian's first outing of the 2025 campaign.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. Christopher Newport will also provide a video broadcast of the battle with Randy Foster and Jackson Deal calling all of the action. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

After opening the year ranked in the top-six in all three major preseason polls, CNU pieced together an emphatic statement in the opener last Saturday. Squaring off against in-state rival Hampden-Sydney, the Captains took down the Tigers, 24-8, during a rain-soaked showdown at Jennings Family Stadium.

The 16-goal victory was the program's largest since a 25-8 triumph at Stockton during a Coastal Lacrosse Conference clash on April 15, 2023. It also equaled the second-largest victory in a season opener in school history. Only the 2022 squad began with a more convincing win after topping Roanoke, 22-5.

Headlining the action, sophomore Kevin Miller established new single-game program records with 13 points and eight assists. For that performance, he was named the USA Lacrosse Magazine National Player of the Week. Additionally, he was recognized as the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career and earned a spot on the USILA National Team of the Week.

Along with Miller, Brett Kelley was also named to the National Team of the Week after forcing six turnovers against the Tigers. Two of his takeaways led to fast-break goals, while three killed clear attempts as the Captains limited Hampden-Sydney to a 50 percent success rate in transition during the first two quarters.

In addition to the award-winners, Jamie Smith erupted for eight goals, which equaled the third-highest total in program history and the most by any player in the NCAA so far this season. Meanwhile, Brett Jackson chipped in with six points against HSC, while Fred Fulkerson, Jackson Platner, and Luke Solomon had two apiece.

Christopher Newport also controlled possession throughout the contest as three-time All-American Warner Cabaniss won 16 of his 23 faceoffs, while Grant Giunchi went 7-for-8. Overall, the Captains won 26 total faceoffs, which equaled the fifth-most in program history.

CNU will face a veteran-laden squad on Saturday as Adrian features a slew of returning standouts from last year's team, which produced an 8-8 record. Senior Michael Jonas ranks third in school history with 207 career points and fourth with 122 goals and 85 assists. Meanwhile, senior defenseman Cameron Reed is the program's all-time leader with 127 caused turnovers, and fourth-year goalie Sam Spangler sits second in school lore with 24 wins and third with 478 saves.

All three of those Bulldogs secured All-Conference accolades last season, as did senior midfielders Riley Edwards and Brandon Hoerauf. Incredibly, of the 10 Adrian players that started at least 10 games in 2024, nine are back on the roster this spring.

Saturday will be just the second all-time meeting between CNU and Adrian. The two programs last met on February 27, 2008 with the Bulldogs securing a 17-5 victory at Captains Field.

After this weekend, Christopher Newport will hit the road for a test at No. 4 Washington and Lee on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
