ARLINGTON, Va. – Christopher Newport University led by just two at the intermission Wednesday night, but broke open a close game in the second half to beat Marymount University, 82-70. The victory at Converse Family Fieldhouse extended CNU's winning streak to five straight games, and
John Krikorian's squad is now 6-2 on the year.
Junior
Isaiah Dozier led the way for the Captains, scoring 17 of his game-high 19 points after halftime. Dozier also contributed eight rebounds and four assists, and was six-for-ten from the field and five-for-six at the foul line. Junior
Tyson Henderson also excelled for CNU, posting a double-double by pouring in 17 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Henderson also posted seven assists, two steals, and a blocked shot. Dozier and Henderson were joined in double figures in the scoring column by junior
Toa Hollenbeck, who tallied 14 points, and junior
Ethan Ward, who registered 11.
The back-and-forth opening half saw the teams exchange the lead five times and the score tied at eight different junctures. After holding a 36-34 edge at the break, the Captains never trailed in the second half and pushed the lead to as many as 13 points en route to the 12-point victory.
"Unfortunately, that's been part of our identity this year, a tale of two teams," Head Coach
John Krikorian said following the win. "When we're good, we're really good. We just need to figure out how to be good for more than six or seven minute stretches. Credit to Marymount, they sped us up a bit in the first half and got us out of our comfort zone, and there was a lot of one-on-one basketball in the first half. We did a much better job in the second half getting good shots and playing good fundamental defense, and that's the team we're trying to be."
The Captains made 17 of 32 shots (53 percent) from the field in the second stanza, and eight-of-nine at the line (89 percent) after halftime to secure the win. CNU out-rebounded the Saints, 47-33, for the night and held MU to just 37 percent shooting in the game.
Christopher Newport and Marymount have now met 31 times in the all-time series, and the Captains hold a 27-4 advantage, and have won the last six games. The Saints fell to 1-7 with the defeat, and have now dropped five straight.
Christopher Newport returns to action on Saturday with another road game, as the Captains travel to Buena Vista, Va., to take on the Knights of Southern Virginia University. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
