Captains Shootout Opens Monday at the Freeman Center; CNU Hosts Hood College at 7 PM

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
Christopher Newport University hosts the two-day Captains Shootout beginning Monday, with two games to be played at the Freeman Center. Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) plays Johnson & Wales University (N.C.) in the opening game at 5:00 p.m., followed by the Captains and Hood College (Md.) at 7:00 p.m.

Christopher Newport has a record of 9-3 heading into the annual tournament, and the Captains are coming off a 79-73 victory over Denison University in the Jay Bilas Classic in Charlotte, N.C., on December 20th. Junior Toa Hollenbeck led the Captains with a 24-point performance vs. the Big Red, scoring11 points in the opening half and 13 more after halftime, and ended the day seven-of-13 from the field and eight-of-nine at the foul stripe. The Chesapeake native was named the Player of the Week in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) following the triumph, and is now averaging a team-high 17.8 points per game. Hollenbeck has now received the conference accolade twice this season.

The Blazers of Hood are 7-1 on the year heading into the Captains Shootout. Hood 's wins include an overtime victory over 22nd-ranked Catholic University, 109-106, on November 8th. The Blazers only loss came on December 2nd in Baltimore, a 93-89 setback at Johns Hopkins University. Hood last played on December 11th, winning at home over Shenandoah University, 101-75. The Blazers have scored more than 100 points four times already, and are averaging 95.8 points per game, and a dozen three-point field goals per outing.

CNU's meeting with Hood College Monday night will be just the second in history, and the Captains prevailed in the initial battle on December 30, 2014, at the Freeman Center in the very same tournament. Christopher Newport posted a 75-68 win in the first meeting ever with the school from Frederick, Md.

In the opening game Monday at 5:00 p.m., the Tigers of RIT enter play with a 2-4 record while the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales are 1-11. The game will be the first-ever meeting of the schools. Action will continue in the Captains Shootout on Tuesday, when Hood will play Johnson & Wales at 5:00 p.m., and CNU will host RIT at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets for the games will be available at the Freeman Center Ticket Office prior to the action Monday and Tuesday. Christopher Newport games are broadcast live on the Home of the Captains, Xtra 99.1 FM and CNUsports.com. The pre-game show will begin at 6:40 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
