Magical Run Comes to an End as No. 1 CNU Field Hockey Falls to No. 6 Tufts, 1-0, in Final Four Battle

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Battling until the bitter end, the top-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team came up just short in its quest for a national championship appearance as the Captains dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to No. 6 Tufts in a Final Four thriller on a cloud-covered Friday afternoon at Robin L. Sheppard Field in Hartford, Connecticut.

In a 60-minute defensive battle, the Jumbos scored on a deflection early in the second quarter to provide the game's only goal. Despite the strike, the Captains provided an endless string of highlights on the back end while keeping a tight lid on the high-powered Tufts' attack.

Between the pipes, senior Lily Kerr added a fitting punctuation mark to her All-American career as the fourth-year phenom brushed aside three on-target rips, including a huge save on a penalty stroke that would have given the Jumbos a two-goal cushion in the first half.

Along with Kerr, the rest of the defense stepped up throughout the back-and-forth affair. Kendall Gibson blocked a shot early in the third quarter, while the penalty corner crew clamped down on three attempts by Tufts, including tremendous work by Ellie Nuckols, who consistently applied immediate pressure as the flyer.

Overall, Christopher Newport surrendered only eight shots to an opponent that entered the contest averaging 27 attempts per game in this year's NCAA Tournament. That performance capped off an unbelievable run by the defense during the national playoffs. During their three outings, the Captains squared off against three of the country's top-10 offenses in terms of goals-per-game. Entering the postseason, Lynchburg, Salisbury, and Tufts were all averaging over 3.5 tallies per contest, but they combined for only two goals against the stout CNU defense.

On the other end of the field, Christopher Newport generated a handful of scoring opportunities on Friday, including a heart-pounding push in the eighth minute that resulted in a series of on-target blasts. However, Tufts managed to escape unscathed and keep the Captains off the board.

With the setback, Christopher Newport concluded the 2025 campaign with a 19-1 record while making the second Final Four appearance in program history. Meanwhile, Tufts advanced to the title bout for the second straight year while improving to 18-3 on the season.

Less than three minutes into regulation, the Jumbos secured the game's first corner, but Nuckols blew out of the cage and attacked the shooter at the top of the arc before Tufts could attempt a rip. Later, on a secondary surge, Courtney Hughlett picked off a centering feed inside the circle to stamp out another look, while Kelly Via jumped into a passing lane and forced an errant feed to skip through the circle.

Following the turnover by Tufts, Via helped clear the defensive end before Nuckols launched a rocket into the zone. On the interior, Kate Engle and Lindsey Loar kept the ball pinned down low while fighting with a pair of defenders. Eventually, their pressure resulted in a corner in the ninth minute.

On the ensuing play, Nuckols inserted the ball to Courtney Hughlett, who tossed it to her sister. From the left edge of the circle, Caroline Hughlett whipped a screamer towards the cage, but Tufts' keeper made a diving save to clean up the initial attempt.

Collecting the rebound, Loar roped a seed towards the right post, which was cleared off the baseline by a defender. Then, Iasiello crashed down and pumped another dart, but it caught the foot of a Jumbo and resulted in a second corner.

Unfortunately, the Captains came away empty-handed again on the follow-up attempt after a bouncer by Courtney Hughlett slid past the left pipe.

Back on defense, Nuckols threw up a roadblock on a clear attempt along the right boundary before Via handled a dangerous aerial to prevent the rainbow from connecting with a streaker in the left corner. Later, in the waning moments of the stanza, Courtney Hughlett won control of a bouncer inside the circle to kill off a final run by Tufts, which kept the game scoreless entering the second period.

With a fresh 15 minutes on the clock, the Jumbos served as the aggressor early in the quarter. Eventually, in the 18th minute, Tufts capitalized on the pressure with a deflection along the left side of the circle as the ball just snuck inside the post and gave the team a 1-0 edge.

Battling back, Christopher Newport tried to respond. In the middle of the period, Avery Mast served a ball inside, but the Jumbos broke it up right in front of the cage. Later, Gigi Stephan gobbled up a clear attempt and fed the ball to Iasiello. With some room to work, the junior swung into the left corner and made a run towards the circle, but she was bottled up just before sneaking inside.

Still marching forward, Courtney Hughlett circled past three defenders and went to her backhand with a slick reversal along the left baseline, but her ensuing shot caught the side of the cage.

After CNU came up short on the offensive end, Kerr put together a clinic on the opposite side of the field. In the 27th minute, a Jumbo slipped free and launched a pointblank blast from the left side of the circle, but Kerr punted the initial shot. Later, Tufts was awarded a penalty stroke, but the two-time All-American made a diving save to wall off a worm-burner along the left post, which kept the deficit at one entering halftime

Following the break, Tufts stayed on the attack and kept testing CNU's back line. Standing up against the onslaught, Gibson blocked a missile inside the arc, while Via dipped low and prevented a turnaround attempt with a low tackle on the interior. Courtney Hughlett also picked off three rollers, including a pair along the right side of the circle to halt the early rush.

Later in the period, Gibson ripped the ball off the stick of a shooter and helped kickstart a counter attack. Pushing forward, Caroline Hughlett wiggled free and tried to find Brylee Johnston, who leaked into the circle after running past the defense. Sadly, the pass was deflected just before it landed on Johnston's stick.

With time ticking down in the third quarter, Tufts returned to the offensive end, but Christopher Newport stepped up again. This time, Gibson stayed on the hip of a shooter and forced an off-target rip to sail past the right post. Then, on a corner, Nuckols raced out and pressured a pair of Jumbos before Kerr made a sliding save on the inside. Preventing a second-chance opportunity, Gibson raced in and slapped the ricochet out of the circle to punctuate the period.

After a short respite, Christopher Newport put together a brilliant run early in the fourth frame. Caroline Hughlett launched a screamer between a pair of defenders, which was kicked away by the Tufts' goalie. Grabbing her own rebound, she curled past two Jumbos and punched the ball off the foot of a third defender to secure a corner.

On the ensuing play, Nuckols fed the insert to Courtney Hughlett, who broke out a behind-the-back feed to her sister. Looking to finish what she started, Caroline Hughlett unleashed a bullet from the left side, but it was blocked at the last minute by a defender.

Trading runs, Tufts raced into the circle, but Morgan Shealer tied up an attacker near the left baseline before Via boxed out a shooter on the inside. Although the Jumbos eventually collected a corner, Nuckols prevented a clean look from the top of the arc, while Courtney Hughlett stayed in front of a second attacker as the ball bounced past the right post.

After surviving the scare, Caroline Hughlett tried to flip the field with an outlet pass to Iasiello and Emma Weber, who were stationed behind the Tufts' defense. Unfortunately, a Jumbo was able to break up the feed along the 25 to prevent a fast-break opportunity.

With time winding down, Loar squeezed underneath a defender near the left baseline and attempted to flip the ball to Emily Evans, who was stationed behind the Jumbos along the right post. However, her run was shut down before any damage could be done with two minutes remaining in regulation.

Seconds later, Loar chipped a ball to Caroline Hughlett, who was swallowed by two defenders along the top edge of the arc. After gaining possession, Tufts had a one-on-one breakaway going in the opposite direction, but Shealer slowed down the run and knocked the ball away before reinforcements arrived on the scene.

Sadly, after moving the ball across midfield, Tufts never let CNU cross the center stripe again as the Jumbos ran off the final few ticks to wrap up the win.

Overall, Tufts held a modest 8-5 advantage in shots, while both teams generated three corners.

Although the setback put an end to the remarkable tenures of Kerr and Evans, the two seniors walked off the field as the winningest players in program history. Together, they arrived on campus in the fall of 2022 and joined a squad that had made two NCAA Tournament appearances over the previous seven seasons. On Friday, they concluded their fourth straight trip to the national playoffs while punctuating their time at CNU with a 67-11 record - by far the finest of any class in school lore.
