NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Freshman setter
Fielding Croft had 43 assists, an average of 14.3 per set, and CNU volleyball never trailed in a 25-18, 25-15, 25-15 win over No. 18 Washington & Lee Saturday in the Freeman Center.
It was the second match in a row Croft had at least 40 assists. She finished with 49 in a 3-1 win over Bridgewater College on Wednesday. She's averaged at least 10 assists per set in each of the Captains' last 10 games.
The Captains (19-7) tied the program record for kills in a three-set match with 54 and were led by
Simara Alexander with 15 and
Alyssa Dozier with 14. Alexander had just two errors on 25 attempts to hit a team-high .520 in the match while adding an ace and a shared block for 16.5 points.
Alyssa Dozier had 14 kills (.393) along with four assisted blocks for 16.
Samantha Dorn had 11 kills, seven coming in the second set.
Maddie Hanes led CNU with 20 digs for the second consecutive match.
Avery Hanly had two aces. Croft had 15 of her assists in the first set, in which the Captains jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Alexander, Dozier and
Emmy Carpenedo each had five kills.
The second set was almost a replay with CNU taking control early and never trailing. The Captains hit .412 with two attack errors.
CNU used a 7-0 run to pull away in the third.
Next for the Captains will be the CNU Invitational. The Captains will go against Eastern (Pa.) University and Centre (Ky.) College on Friday and Roanoke College on Saturday. The RC game will be Senior Day.
