NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team continued to showcase its dominance at home on Sunday afternoon with an 83-45 victory against Haverford College (6-6) at the Freeman Center. The Captains improved to 14-1 overall this season while capturing the 50th straight win against regular season competition at home -- a streak that dates back to December 16, 2018.
In another well-balanced effort from the sixth-ranked Captains, Christopher Newport cruised to a 38-point victory over the Fords in front of nearly 200 dedicated fans on Sunday despite a late change in schedule due to winter weather. All but one of the 16 active players found their way into the scoring column and the Captains dished out 24 assists in the game on 33 made baskets.
Two-time defending C2C Player of the Week
Hannah Orloff led all scorers with 14 points (6 of 8 shooting) while adding seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal in 15 minutes of action. Only one other CNU player was in double figures in the balanced outing as junior
McKenna Snively splashed in a pair of three-pointers and added two beautiful drives to the basket to finish the day with a season-high 10 points.
Sophomore
Mia Wilson added nine points with three triples in the second half as she lead an onslaught from long range. The Captains combined for a season-high 11 made three-pointers on 25 attempts for a 44.0% shooting percentage from deep. Wilson had three, Snively two, and six other players drained one each from beyond the arc. Taking on a Haverford squad that ranked among the nation's elite in three-point shooting, the Captains came away with a significant win in three-point shooting as the defense held the Fords to just 2-of-13 from deep (.154).
The Captains imposed their dominance early in the contest and never looked back as CNU scored the first 10 points in the game to race out to a double-digit lead under three and a half minutes into the game. On the very first possession,
Elizabeth Creed swung a quick pass to the corner for Snively and the junior sharpshooter swished the first shot from three to open up the scoring. After Creed grabbed the rebound on the other end, it was seniors
Alexia Lindsey and
Hannah Orloff connecting for a layup inside to make it 5-0. Creed then found Lindsey cutting to the basket for another layup and CNU was up 7-0 less than 90 seconds in; the senior guard added a free throw and Orloff connected on a second-chance layup to close out the early 10-0 run.
After the Fords got on the board, rookie
Madison McKenzie slammed in a three-pointer from the corner off a dish by
Caitlin Crump to re-establish a 10-point lead. A couple of free-throws and a jumper by the visitors trimmed the first quarter lead back to six, the Captains responded again with five straight to end the quarter with a 20-9 lead. Snively finished on an athletic scoop at the rim between two defenders and
Hailey Kellogg buried the third three-pointer of the period for CNU to close out the first ten minutes for CNU.
Haverford would get to within nine early in the second quarter before CNU started to pull away on an 11-0 run triggered by a pair of CNU's veteran leaders --
Camille Malagar and
Gabbi San Diego. Malagar, who missed Friday's game to illness, returned to the lineup in the second quarter and instantly made an impact with a tough runner on the baseline to kickstart the run. Then, making her first appearance since December 4 when she left the game injured against Southern Virginia, San Diego wasted no time making a triumphant return on Sunday when she drilled a three-pointer from the corner on her second touch of the game. San Diego, who has played in 82 career games despite battling knee injuries in each of the last three seasons, received an acknowledging ovation from the Captains' faithful in the stands in recognition of her return to the Royal Blue and Silver lineup.
The three-pointer by San Diego was followed by a jumper from the elbow by
Sarah Pritz and a nice find inside by
Aliyah Elliott when she shuffled a quick pass to
Emma O'Connor for two. Snively then finished another layup and the Captains' lead was quickly up to 20, 34-14, with 4:31 left in the half. The Captains carried a 44-23 advantage into halftime after shooting 51.5 percent (17-33) from the field in the first 20 minutes.
Stingy defense from the CNU side continued to force Haverford to struggle in the third quarter as the visitors managed just six points in the period. Christopher Newport outscored the Fords, 18-6, and extended the lead to 33 by the end of the third when Crump grabbed an open court interception and finished on the run out before Malagar added another bucket with a baseline drive and pull-up jumper. Haverford was just 3-for-14 in the third quarter and had ten turnovers while CNU grabbed eight of the 13 steals in the period.
The three-point shooting continued in the fourth quarter when four Captains connected from long range. Creed, Wilson, Pritz, and
Katerina Dakos all hit from beyond the arc in the final quarter as CNU extended to as many as a 40-point lead.
In a game where the Captains accumulated 24 total assists it was Creed who led the way with five. She had a full sheet on Sunday with five points, five assists, and a team-high eight rebounds. Kellogg and O'Connor each added three assists while Wilson, Dakos, Elliott, and Crump all added two. On the defensive end, Lindsey snagged four steals to lead the way while Crump picked up three thefts for CNU.
CNU shot 47.1 percent (33-70) in the game including while holding Haverford to just 33.3 percent (18-54).
The Captains have now won 50 regular season home games in a row and improved to 271-39 all-time in the Freeman Center for a winning percentage of 87.4 percent. Haverford is the 57th different team to play against Christopher Newport since the building opened in 2000-01 and CNU is 132-12 (.917) at home in 12 seasons under the direction of head coach
Bill Broderick.
Following Sunday's win, Christopher Newport will return to the road for one game before a four-game homestand begins next Sunday. On Wednesday, January 8, the Captains are scheduled to play at Marymount University (3-9) at 6:00 p.m.
