NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In their second game of the weekend, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will return to the Freeman Center on Sunday afternoon to host Haverford College (6-5) at 1:00 p.m. The Captains are riding a six-game winning streak and are now 13-1 on the season.
SCHEDULE CHANGE... the matchup was originally scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday but head coach
Bill Broderick announced a game time change due to potential travel concerns for Haverford with winter weather moving into the area this weekend. Tipoff will now be at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for all the action at CNUsports.com. Links can be found at the top of this page and on the women's basketball schedule. The ticket office opens one hour prior to tip and seats are available for purchase at $10 for chairback seating and $5 for general admission.
Christopher Newport is taking on Haverford College for the third time in the all-time series after meeting for the first time in the 2018 NCAA Tournament first round. The Captains won the neutral site battle at Randolph-Macon College by a final score of 63-50. Then, the two teams matched up for the second time last season when CNU traveled to Pennsylvania to face the Fords and earned a 74-44 win. In that matchup,
Alivia Giles led the way with 41 points on 6-of-7 shooting while rookie
Mia Wilson added 11 points off the bench.
While Giles has graduated, Wilson is back for her second year with the Captains and is coming off an eight-point showing with a pair of three-pointers on Friday against Stevenson. Three CNU players finished in double figures against the Mustangs as
Hannah Orloff led the way with a double-double (16 pts, 15 reb),
Alexia Lindsey added 12 points and
Elizabeth Creed poured in 10.
The Captains have been led this season by
Camille Malagar with 10.5 points per game while Creed (8.5 ppg) and Orlof (8.0 ppg) have established themselves as top options as well. The balance continues to be the driving force for a talented CNU offense that is averaging over 80 points per game as 14 different players are scoring at least four points per game this year.
Haverford is 6-5 heading into Sunday's tilt with back-to-back wins against Gallaudet and Penn State-Abington. The Fords are being led by junior Carolina Orza with 16.7 points per game while playing nearly 34 minutes per contest. Orza is knocking down 2.6 three-pointers per game. Audrey Jakway (13.1 ppg) and Brianna Feifer (11.5 ppg) are also averaging double figures for Haverford coming into Sunday's matchup.
Following the non-conference bout on Sunday, the Captains will hit the road to play Marymount on Wednesday, January 8 in Northern Virginia. CNU will then return to the Freeman Center for four straight over the following two weeks.
