No. 5 CNU Women's Basketball Hosts Regent for Annual WBCA Play4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness Game

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The penultimate home game of the regular season is set for Saturday afternoon as the fifth-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will welcome Regent University (1-11) to the Freeman Center for a 2:00 p.m. tip. The Captains, perfect at home in ten games this season, will put a 20-1 record on the line against the Royals in the annual WBCA Play4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness Game.

Tickets remain for the matchup against the Captains' future Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foe and can be purchased at the Freeman Center Ticket Office opening one hour prior to tip. For fans unable to attend in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.

The game will provide an opportunity to donate to breast cancer awareness as CNU will don their pink jerseys for the contest. Through Play4Kay, the game provides an opportunity to bring communities together and honor cancer warriors, survivors, and thrivers in the fight against cancer. The movement is the largest fundraiser for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and unites players, coaches, officials, and fans to do something for the greater good that far exceeds wins and losses in competition.

Heading into the game, Christopher Newport has won 13 in a row dating back to December 9 against N.C. Wesleyan. In that 13-game run, the Captains have featured nine different leading scorers as balance continues to be a major factor to success for CNU in 2024-25. Most recently, Alexia Lindsey scored a career-high 16 points in a road win at Guilford College on Wednesday night as CNU escaped with a hard-fought 75-68 win.

This season, fifth-year senior Camille Malagar has led the way with 9.2 points per game while senior forward Hannah Orloff is enjoying a career year in the front court. Orloff is averaging 8.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game while collecting four C2C Player of the Week certificates. While the veteran leadership is at the top, the freshman class has combined for a tremendous first year in 2024-25. Emma O'Connor, Sarah Pritz, Madison McKenzie, Katerina Dakos, Charlotte Torgerson, and Aliyah Elliott have played a huge factor in the CNU success as the Captains rank second nationally in bench scoring this season.

Defensively, the Captains are holding opponents to just 54.4 points per game while forcing an average of 32 turnovers per game, ranking fourth nationally. The defensive pressure is a team effort with ten different players posting at least 20 steals this season. Leading the way is Lindsey with 46 thefts while junior Hailey Kellogg ranks second with a career-high 36.

Regent is led by first-year head coach Donte Minter in 2024-25. The Royals are led by My'Angel Carter and Courtney Rowley with 12.3 points per game. Carter is also hauling in over 9.2 rebounds per game while Rowley leads the squad with 27 three-pointers. All five starters are averaging over 28 minutes per game this season including Rowley and Carter.

Saturday's bout is the second-to-last home game as Christopher Newport will host Senior Day on Saturday, February 9 against Penn State Harrisburg at 2:00 p.m. Following the final matchup at the Freeman Center, CNU will close the regular season at Mary Washington and Salisbury.
