NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University returns to the Freeman Center on Saturday, as the 14th-ranked Captains host the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. CNU is 16-4 heading into the game, while UCSC has a mark of 10-10.
Saturday's battle will mark the first home game for
John Krikorian's squad in 28 days, as the last four games have been played on the road with CNU posting a 3-1 record over the span. Most recently, the Captains registered a 99-77 triumph last Sunday at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C., as five Captains reached double figures in scoring led by fifth-year senior All-American
Jahn Hines' 22 points. Sophomore
Tyson Henderson tallied a career-high 21 points, and sophomore
Ethan Ward recorded a double-double with 15 points and a career-best 14 rebounds.
Sunday's game marked the second straight, and fourth this season, the Captains have scored over 90 points. CNU won at Cairn University, 94-72, on January 20th and also surged over the 90-point mark in wins over Marymount (94-76) and Mary Baldwin (96-76).
Christopher Newport's last home game came on January 4th when the Captains knocked off the top-ranked team in the nation at the time, Emory University. CNU downed the Eagles, 83-76, to improve to 9-1 at home this season.
The Banana Slugs are currently on a three-game trip playing fellow league members of the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference. UC Santa Cruz fell at Salisbury on Thursday, 70-63, and will also play at the Freeman Center vs. the University of Mary Washington on Sunday at 12 noon to complete the East coast swing.
Saturday's contest will be the eighth in the all-time series, and the Captains have won six of the first seven with the Slugs. Last year the schools split two games, with UCSC winning at the Freeman Center, 79-62, and the Captains prevailing in the C2C Tournament in Fredericksburg, 58-44.
Saturday's action at the Freeman Center will follow the CNU women's game vs. Regent University, which will begin at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for the doubleheader will be available at the Freeman Center Ticket Office.
