NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Tip is set for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon as the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team hosts Warren Wilson College in the first of four straight home games for the Captains. CNU, ranked No. 7 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 9 in the D3hoops.com Top 25, is 15-1 heading into the matinee matchup.
Ticket prices for the Sunday afternoon bout are $10 for chairback seating and $5 for general admission at the Freeman Center. The ticket office and facility gates will open one hour prior to tip -- students with valid ID will be admitted free of charge. For fans unable to attend in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
The Captains are looking to extend an eight-game winning streak when they take the floor against the Owls on Sunday. The all-time series began last year when the two teams matched up in a home-and-home series and Christopher Newport earned a pair of wins to take a 2-0 lead. This season, Warren Wilson is 0-13 with a game at Regent (0-8) on Saturday evening.
On the court, the strength of the Christopher Newport season has been in the team's depth. Fifth-year senior transfer
Sydney Sherman is set to play in her 100th career game on Sunday; a second-team All-Conference selection at Mary Washington a year ago, Sherman is one of 13 CNU players averaging at least 10 minutes per game this season. She is a part of an impressive front court led by starters
Hannah Orloff and
Elizabeth Creed, averaging 16.4 points and 11.9 rebounds per game together. Orloff is a three-time defending C2C Player of the Week and leads the league in blocked shots as well, with 32 this season.
The depth continues in the backcourt where junior point guard
Hailey Kellogg starts alongside fifth-year senior
Camille Malagar and senior
Alexia Lindsey. Lindsey has 39 steals this season to lead the Captains Chaos defense while Malagar and Kellogg have 22 and 32, respectively. Malagar is leading the offense with 9.9 points per game while Kellogg has dished out a team-high 42 assists.
Warren Wilson will look to slow the nationally-ranked Captains with a lineup led by Moosie Lewis with 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. She has knocked down a team-high 21 three-pointers this season and averages nearly 30 minutes per game.
The Captains will continue the homestand on Saturday, January 18 against Salisbury University at 2:00 p.m.
