GAMBIER, Ohio -- Sophomore
Drew McWhinney connected on a header goal in the 73rd minute to tie the game at 1-1, but the third-ranked Kenyon College Owls (6-0-3) quickly responded for the go-ahead goal and held on for a 3-1 win against No. 8 Christopher Newport on Sunday afternoon. Battling consistent rainfall for the second straight game, the Captains dropped to 5-2-3 on the season with the setback against the nationally-ranked foe.
The top-ten battle favored the home team for the first 45 minutes with the Owls outshooting the Captains, 9-4, but junior goalkeeper
Hayden Dewey was up to the task on three of the four shots on-goal. In the 35th minute, Jacob Lazarus finally got one by the Captains' netminder with a breakaway shot.
In the second half, CNU picked up the pace offensively and ripped nine total shots while also earning four corner kicks. The offensive pressure led to the equalizer in the 73rd minute after a nice setup starting out of the back. Rookie
Josh Monzon blasted a cross-field long ball that was settled quickly by
Carson Grove. The senior then turned and lifted a cross of his own into the box where McWhinney lay in wait for the header in the middle of the box. The re-directed shot went into the left side of the goal and tied the match up, 1-1, on the road.
Unfortunately for CNU fans, the game was not tied for long as Justin Buchwalter scored less than a minute later to re-take a one-goal lead, 2-1.
The Captains offense put on a full-out assault on goal in the final ten minutes, nearly finding the game-tying goal again in multiple chances. After a long throw-in that reached the center of the Kenyon box, sophomore midfielder
Manzi Siibo spun and whipped a hard shot that sailed just wide left. Then, moments later,
Jason LaViola blistered a line drive that whistled through the box but missed the net just right. McWhinney also added tow more shots in the final ten minutes while rookie
Jack Otto put one on net.
Kenyon withstood each attempt and added a third goal with less than ten seconds remaining on a breakaway as CNU had sent everything forward. In the heavyweight bout, the shot count was near even with the host Owls establishing a small 17-13 advantage including a 7-3 edge in shots on-goal.
CNU will look to bounce back on Wednesday, October 9 as they welcome in Washington and Lee University for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff against the Generals at Captains Field.
