CNU Game Notes
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University opens its home schedule Saturday afternoon, as the Captains take on 7th-ranked Johns Hopkins University at TowneBank Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m., and the contest will be part of Family Weekend activities at CNU. Both teams are 1-0 after winning road games last Saturday to start the season.
Head Coach
Paul Crowley's Captains traveled to Angola, Indiana, to take on Trine University last weekend, and came away with a dominant 42-6 victory over the Thunder. Johns Hopkins, playing for the first time under new Head Coach Dan Woddicka, battled back from a 17-0 first half deficit and edged 17th-ranked Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY, 27-23. Now the squads will meet for just the second time ever after the Blue Jays clipped the Captains last year in Baltimore, 20-14.
"I think we're all looking forward to a fantastic atmosphere and a great battle," Crowley said following CNU's season-opening triumph at Trine. "Family Weekend always brings out a big crowd, and with it being our home opener, I know there will be additional excitement around the game. Throw in the fact we're playing a top ten program that we played so well against last year, I think all the ingredients are there for a special day."Â
CNU dropped the six-point decision to the Jays last September 9th, before rattling off four wins in the next five weeks en route to a 7-4 finish. The Captains claimed their first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) crown and the program's first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2014. Johns Hopkins posted a 12-1 record in 2023, and won the Centennial Conference title outright. Both the Captains and Blue Jays had their seasons come to an end last year with a loss to Randolph-Macon College, with CNU falling to the Yellow Jackets in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, and two weeks later in the third round, Johns Hopkins fell by a late field goal to R-MC.
Gates will open at TowneBank Stadium Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Reserved tickets for the game are sold out, but there will be a limited number of Standing Room Only tickets sold at TowneBank Stadium Saturday beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Standing Room Only tickets will be sold for $5.00.
All Captains games are broadcast live on the Home of the Captains, Xtra 99.1 FM and CNUsports.com. The pre-game show Saturday will begin at 4:30 p.m. Links are provided at the top of this story to the live CNU video of the game, as well as Live Stats and the full CNU game notes package..
