Christopher Newport Settles for Scoreless Draw Against Stockton in Steve Shaw Classic Finale

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Playing on a sweltering afternoon at Captains Field, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against Stockton University (0-1-1) on Saturday in the Steve Shaw Classic finale. The Captains held a 16-5 advantage in total shots but could not find the back of the net despite recording their second straight shutout to start the year.

After the tie, CNU is now 1-0-1 on the season and is off to a stalwart season defensively. In two games, the Captains have yet to allow a goal while averaging five shots per game allowed. Leading the effort again on Saturday was junior Asher Kuzemka and rookie Declan Karney in the middle of the back line. On the outside, Yazan Yaghmmour and Matt Liss helped stymie the Ospreys along with defensive midfielders Colin Skwirut, Trevor Smith, and Miles Maggioncalda

Only one shot on-goal was recorded by the Stockton attack but it forced CNU keeper Hayden Dewey to make a highlight-reel diving save. In the 13th minute, Uche Wokocha ripped a hard shot toward the left side of the goal but Dewey read it well and made the diving stop.

From there, it was the CNU attack that held possession for the majority of the contest. Yaghmmour led the Captains in attempts with five and put a pair of shots on-goal. Manzi Siibo also had a good look inside that was deflected by a defender late in the first half. Early in the second half, Drew McWhinney put an attempt on frame and Liss sent a shot high of the netting. Kuzemka flicked a header toward the goalmouth in the 60th minute, but another save was made by the Ospreys keeper.

With the game running final at 0-0, the Captains picked up their second clean sheet of the season and the first solo shutout for Dewey. It was his second career shutout in his 20th career start.

Christopher Newport will return to action at home next weekend as they welcome Concordia (Texas) on Friday, September 6 at 7:00 pm and Widener on Saturday, September 7 at 7:00 pm.
