Sunday's showdown will mark the fourth straight meeting between Salisbury and CNU in the league championship. The two teams have battled for the conference crown every year since 2021, including a 9-4 win by the Sea Gulls last season.
Christopher Newport earned its spot in the title bout after knocking off Stockton, 19-12, on Wednesday. Against the Ospreys, four Captains had hat-tricks, including four-goal outings by
Kevin Miller and
Brett Jackson.
Drew Miller and
Robby Adams also had three tallies apiece, while
Andrew Cook notched five points.
Defensively, CNU stockpiled 25 takeaways, which equaled the 10th-most in program history.
Ryan Young recorded his 150th career caused turnover, joining former All-Americans Phoenix Hines and Max Wayne as the only Captains to reach that plateau. Meanwhile,
Brandon Young added four caused turnovers, while
AJ Rosacker and
Colin DeGrassi tallied three apiece.
Wednesday's showdown with Stockton also marked
Alex Brendes' 85th career appearance. That broke the previous program record set by Hines and Wayne from 2018-22. His 85 outings also stand as the ninth-most by any active lacrosse player in the NCAA.
Making the most of his time on the field, Brendes also ranks eighth among all active players with 205 goals. Meanwhile, he is just four points shy of joining former legend Dylan Rice as the only Captains to reach 300 in a career.
Among other veteran contributors,
Coby Auslander sits ninth among active players with 158 career assists, while
Zac Hanway is 12th with 745 saves. Hanway has also seen 4,021 minutes of work in the crease. That leads all active goalies and ranks fifth in the history of collegiate lacrosse. He is just 19 minutes shy of matching former Albany legend and current PLL star Blaze Riorden for the fourth-most in NCAA history.
Salisbury is also anchored by a slew of veteran standouts. Jude Brown ranks first among all active collegiate players with 98 appearances, 455 points, and 266 assists. Meanwhile, Josh Sanchez is third in games played with 97, while Nicholas Ransom is seventh in goals-against-average with a 7.59 mark.
So far this season, the Sea Gulls rank first in the nation in clearing percentage (.914) and scoring offense (19.22 goals per game). On an individual level, Ransom leads the country with a 6.51 goals-against-average, while Brown is third with a 3.67 assists-per-game rate. Blake Malamphy is also 15th nationally in faceoff percentage (.667), and John DeFazio is 27th in takeaways-per-contest (2.56).
CNU and Salisbury last met on April 6 when the Sea Gulls picked up an 18-12 victory in Newport News. Brendes and Cook both had hat-tricks for the Captains, while
Luke Nardone collected three takeaways. SU was led by Brice Bromwell, who had seven points, including five goals.
