Nationally-Ranked Captains Advance to Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Final With 5-0 Semifinal Shutout

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- In dominating fashion in Saturday's semifinal round, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team advanced to the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship after a 5-0 win against #4-seed Salisbury University. The Captains shut out the Sea Gulls and will play in the conference final for the ninth straight season.

The familiar final was set up by the Captains advancing courtesy of the shutout win on Saturday. CNU improved to 12-5 overall, recording the most wins in a season since 2019 when the Captains finished with 13 wins.

Against the Sea Gulls, Christopher Newport was impressive, surrendering just two games in doubles action and earning a pair of straight set wins in singles to clinch the victory. The doubles sweep included a shutout win, 8-0, by the Captains' top tandem, Raine Weis and Tessa Trate, against Gibelle Beaujon and Olivia Hall. Weis and Trate, the C2C Doubles Team of the Year, improved to 17-4 overall this season and moved into a tie for sixth most wins in a single season in program history -- the most recent tandem in a four-way tie for sixth to reach 17 wins in a year was Marion Gloor and Kim Morrisett in 2013.

The doubles sweep was completed when Mia Linam and Samantha Robertson paired up for an 8-1 win at No. 2 against Sarah Cooper and Lily Muir while Megan Bauer teamed with Kylie Schaefer for an 8-1 win against Hannah Carter and Evelyn Whiteside at No. 3.

CNU jumped out to an early lead in all four singles matches being played at the UMW Indoor Tennis Center, but it was Weis and Trate who clinched the win for CNU. Both earned 6-1, 6-1 wins at No. 1 and 2, respectively, and the C2C Player of the Year, Weis, clinched the postseason victory. She downed Beaujon at No. 1 while Trate captured her win against Hall.

While CNU has made eight consecutive title match appearances, Sunday's bout against #2-seed Mary Washington will be different in that it is the first time the Captains will be playing as the top seed in the tournament. The two teams will match up in the final at 2:00 p.m. in Fredericksburg with live stats and a live video webcast available at CNUsports.com.
