NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- For the third time this season the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team swept the weekly awards announced by the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference as fifth-year senior star
Dylan Weber was named the C2C Pitcher of the Week and sophomore shortstop
Josh Reinhold hauled in C2C Player of the Week honors. The Captains (23-8) are preparing for a pair of road trips this week to Lynchburg on Tuesday afternoon and Randolph-Macon on Wednesday as the regular season winds down. Both games will start at 3:00 pm.
Earning C2C Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season, Weber helped lift the 11th-ranked Captains to a dominant 11-0 win at Mary Washington on Saturday to surge into a first-place tie with Salisbury atop the conference standings. Weber combined with two relievers for a three-hit shutout as he improved to 7-1 on the season with eight strikeouts and just one walk.
Making his program-record 52nd career start, Weber was perfect through the first four innings before allowing his first base hit to the Eagles. In the fifth, he stranded three and then quickly added two more scoreless frames to close out his 25th career win, moving into a tie for second most in CNU lore. By the end of his start, Weber had recorded his 360th career strikeout to tie the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference record set by Mary Washington's Kevin Foeman from 2003-06. The newly crowned strikeout king of the conference also pulled within 18 punchouts of the CNU standard set by Kenny Moreland with 378.
While Weber was leading the way on the mound, the Captains also were led offensively by a strong week from sophomore
Josh Reinhold, who earned his second C2C Player of the Week certificate in the last four weeks. Reinhold extended his record-setting consecutive games reached streak to 73 straight games as he continues a run that includes every game of his career as a Captain. In helping CNU go 2-1 this week, Reinhold drove in a pair and scored five times while hitting .357.
During the week, the Lewes, Del. native collected his 100th career hit when he smacked three against Washington and Lee in just his 72nd career game, marking the fastest player to reach the century mark since Tommy Vitaletti hit his 100th in 59 career games in 2016. Over his first two seasons, Reinhold ranks sixth on the all-time charts with a .480 career on-base percentage in 288 career at-bats. This season, he leads the Captains with a .374/.478/.534 slash line with a team-high 37 runs scored.
Weber, Reinhold, and the rest of the CNU baseball team will hit the road for a Tuesday afternoon matchup against the defending national champion Hornets of Lynchburg after earning a 22-8 win against them at Captains Park on April 10. The return trip in the home-and-home series will see the first pitch tossed at 3:00 pm in the 18th all-time matchup between the programs.
On Wednesday, CNU will turn around and make another road trip to an ODAC foe as they take on Randolph-Macon College at 3:00 p.m. The Captains won the first matchup this season, 9-6, and closed the all-time series record to 29-32 against the Yellow Jackets. The win snapped a six-game skid against Randolph-Macon.
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for both games, with links found on CNUsports.com.
Following the two road games, CNU will host Salisbury on May 4 at 2:00 pm in the final game of the regular season to determine the 2024 C2C regular season champion and host of the conference tournament.
