No. 11 CNU Baseball Stopped on the Road by No. 20 North Carolina Wesleyan, 10-5

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- After an early back-and-forth saw the score sitting at 4-3 after four and a half innings, a five-run fifth by the 20th-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops (26-10) proved to be enough to pull away from the 11th-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team on Tuesday afternoon, 10-5. The Captains fall to 21-8 overall this season despite scoring runs in four innings and seeing seven different players log base hits in the game.

A seven-game winning streak against the Bishops came to an end with the setback while CNU also suffered just the second loss in the team's last 12 games.

Junior Lincoln Lubsen highlighted the offensive production on the day with a go-ahead two-run double in the third inning while sophomore Sam Benedict also added an RBI single in the top of the sixth.

In addition to the run-producing base hits, the Captains also got a one-out double by sophomore Josh Reinhold in the top of the third. With the base hit, Reinhold reached base for the 71st straight game in his career, adding to a record-breaking career-opening run for the Captains.

On the hill, Brandon Cassedy (6-3) suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs over 3.0 innings pitched with two strikeouts and one walk. Marcus Dux came on in relief and surrendered five runs on four hits before a trio of veteran relievers closed out the final 3.1 innings pitched. Daniel Elliott struck out one and walked one with one hit allowed over 1.1 innings pitched; then, Danny Checkosky gave up one on two hits in the seventh; and, Kyle Lewis wrapped up the game with one strikeout and a double-play ball while facing just three batters.

CNU fell behind, 1-0, after the bottom of the second but quickly rebounded to take the lead in the top of the third. Scott Crosson reached on an infield single before Reinhold's two-bagger to left center field. With two outs, Lincoln Lubsen stepped in and found the gap in left as well, plating the first two runs for CNU.

Unfortunately for CNU fans, the Bishops teetered right back in front with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. After both teams went quietly in the fourth, Zach Dzarnowski got the ball moving in the top of the fifth with a single. He then raced to second on a wild pitch and Lubsen followed with a walk. After an error allowed Doc Daniels to reach, Dzarnowski spun around third base and raced home for a run scored, pulling CNU back within one, 4-3.

The fateful fifth came next as N.C. Wesleyan scored five runs on four hits to take a 9-3 lead halfway through the game. CNU scored one in the sixth and another in the ninth, but the comeback bid would be denied. In the sixth, Eric Wilson blistered a double into left field and then sprinted home on an RBI single by Benedict. In the ninth, Crosson walked and moved up on a groundball followed by a passed ball. Two batters later, Lubsen took ball four in the dirt, which allowed Crosson to race home for the game's final run.

CNU will return to action on Thursday, April 25 as they host Washington and Lee University for a 3:00 pm first pitch at Captains Park. The penultimate regular season home game of the season will include live stats and a live video webcast at CNUsports.com.
