No. 34 CNU Women's Tennis Shuts Out No. 36 Rensselaer to Open Orlando Spring Break Trip

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Opening up a three-match week at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team captured a 9-0 win over No. 36 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday afternoon. The Captains improved to 4-3 this year while RPI falls to 5-2 on the season.

Five Captains secured wins in both singles and doubles on Wednesday while Megan Bauer and Kiersten Chang added one win apiece. Junior Raine Weis had a hard-fought day, winning tiebreakers in both singles and doubles at No. 1.

Weis paired with Tessa Trate at No. 1 doubles facing Lorna Flores Gonzalez and Nicole Ridenour and outlasted the Engineers top tandem in a tiebreak. The Captains' duo won the match 8-7 (7-5) and tied Amy Lawrence and Stephanie Seward for third all-time at Christopher Newport with 34 career doubles wins. They have coupled for the most wins since 2006-08 when Stephanie Leblang and Lindse Pantele set the CNU record with 56 doubles wins and Frannie Shivar and Brittany Stevens finished second with 54 career doubles victories.

In the other two doubles matches, the Captains cruised to a 3-0 lead after Mia Linam and Samantha Robertson notched an 8-5 win over Krisia Flores Gonzalez and Lina Krumpel at No. 2. Bauer played with rookie Kylie Schaefer to capture an 8-2 win over Brooke Bauer and Masha Karach.

With a commanding lead heading into singles play, the Captains clinched with the first two matches at No. 6 and No. 4. Schaefer blitzed by her opponent, Liberty Rogers, at No. 6 without surrendering a game (6-0, 6-0) to put CNU one win away and then Kiersten Chang clinched the match with a win at No. 5 over Bauer (6-2, 6-2).

The team win in tact, the Captains rallied for wins in the remaining four singles matches. Trate and Linam won in straight sets to conclude their 2-0 day as Trate won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 and Linam earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3. Next, Weis faced Ridenour at No. 1 and narrowly lost the first set, 7-5, before racing through the second unscathed, 6-0. In the third set tiebreak, Weis edged out Ridenour for a 10-8 win to keep the shutout going.

Wrapping up the impressive performance for CNU was Samantha Robertson winning a battle at No. 4 against Krisia Flores Gonzalez. She earned a 6-3 win in the first set and then suffered a 7-6 (10-8) tiebreaker loss in the second. Robertson rebounded with a 10-7 win in the third set tiebreaker to close out the day.

CNU will next face No. 11 Carnegie Mellon on Thursday, March 7 before closing out the week against North Central on Sunday.
