MEDFORD, Mass. --
The fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will travel to Massachusetts on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for a top-five challenge against No. 3 Tufts at Bello Field.

Entering the midweek match-up, CNU sits at 5-0 on the season, including 1-0 on the road. Meanwhile, Tufts is 1-0 after knocking off Connecticut College, 19-9, in the season opener on Saturday.

For those fans unable to make the trip, Tufts will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at GoTuftsJumbos.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

CNU is coming off of a 16-9 win over Grove City on Saturday at Jennings Family Stadium. Against the Wolverines, Zac Hanway pocketed 18 saves, which equaled his career-high and matched the eighth-most by a Captain in program history. For that performance, he was celebrated as the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Aided by his work against Grove City, Hanway also established a new program record for career saves. The fifth-year standout now has 640 total stops, topping the previous mark of 635 set by former All-American Matt Hayden from 2014-17.

Along with Hanway, Warner Cabnaiss won 18 of his 26 faceoffs, and the defense forced 15 turnovers. Ryan Young notched three takeaways, while Hanway, AJ Rosacker, and Mark Davison all had two apiece.

Offensively, Coby Auslander posted a game-high six points, including his first hat-trick of the year. Alex Brendes also deposited five goals, while Andrew Cook dished out four assists. Drew Miller also added three goals and a pair of assists, including his 100th career point. In doing so, he became the 18th Captain to reach that milestone.

Overall this season, Christopher Newport currently ranks 14th in the nation in scoring offense with a 17.20 goals-per-game average. Additionally, the Captains are eighth in takeaways-per-contest (16.20) and 23rd in faceoff percentage (.685).

On an individual level, Cabaniss is 12th in faceoff percentage with a .735 mark. Meanwhile, Robby Adams is tied for third in the country with five man-up goals, while Miller is ninth with four.

After advancing to the national championship game last year, Tufts kicked off 2024 with a dominant performance against Connecticut College on Saturday. In the opener, Max Ettinghausen collected six points, including five goals. The Jumbos also won 24 of the game's 32 faceoffs, including an 11-for-12 performance by Parker Merril.

On the defensive side, Ben Frisoli and Joey Waldbaum both forced two turnovers, while Conner Garzone added 12 saves during 45 minutes of action. Ben Friedman came in with five more stops in the final stanza.

Wednesday's meeting will be the first match-up in history between the two programs.

Following the midweek bout, CNU will return to action on March 15 for the start of the Mustang Classic in Owings Mills, Maryland. The Captains will open the tournament against No. 5 Dickinson before facing No. 14 St. Lawrence on March 16.
