NEWPORTS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team celebrated a beautiful, sunny day on the Eyre Courts with a 7-2 win over Shenandoah University (8-5) on Saturday afternoon. The Captains have won three in a row and are now 8-3 overall on the season after the victory over the Hornets.
The match featured just six players from each team as all 12 players took the court in both singles and doubles play. CNU was led by a quartet of Captains who won in both formats including sophomores
Vincent Truong and
Nesh Kumaresan.
The second-year tandem captured an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Kieth Orr and Artem Babaiev. Truong then went on to capture a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Jovan Cirkovic. Kumaresan advanced to also win in straight sets at No. 3 singles against Dominick Suwak by a final score of 6-4, 6-4.
Ashton Legum and
Ryan Monroe were the other two CNU players to win both singles and doubles. Legum paired with
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen for an 8-1 win over Suwak and Cirkovic; Monroe with
Alex Seretis for an 8-3 victory against Anton McCloskey and partner A. Chintahrlapalli.
With the doubles sweep, the Captains needed just two wins in singles to clinch the victory. Legum won at No. 5, 6-3, 6-1, and Monroe outlasted Orr at No. 4 in a 6-7 (6), 6-4, 1-0 (6) final.
The Captains will return to action on Friday at nationally-ranked Mary Washington with match time set for 3:30 p.m.
