NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The sixth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will face its sixth consecutive nationally-ranked opponent on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the Captains host No. 20 Williams in a non-conference tilt at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the midweek match-up, CNU sits at 7-2 on the season, including 5-0 at home. Meanwhile, Williams is 3-3 with a 2-1 record on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. The Captains will also provide a broadcast of the contest with Andy McGregor and Jake Myers calling all of the action. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is coming off of a hard-fought 11-9 victory over No. 13 Lynchburg on Saturday. Trailing by three in the second half - and two in the fourth quarter - the Captains overcame their deficit with seven goals over the last 16 minutes of action.
Coby Auslander led the comeback with five points during the squad's final push, including the game-tying goal, an assist on the go-ahead strike, and the last tally with 70 seconds left in regulation.
On the other end of the field,
Zac Hanway posted his third double-digit save effort of the season after making 11 stops against the Hornets. Seven of his saves came in the second half as he quieted the potent Lynchburg attack to help jumpstart the comeback bid. For that performance, he was named the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
With his performance on Saturday, Hanway also moved into the top-30 in NCAA history in minutes played by a goalie. The fifth-year phenom has now seen 3,677 minutes of action since his debut in 2020. That leads all active goalies in the country, ranks 18th in Division III history, and places him 29th among all players across all divisions of collegiate lacrosse.
In other historic efforts, Saturday's contest marked
Andrew Cook's 50th straight game with at least one goal dating back to February 19, 2022. That stands as the finest run in program history, topping the second-longest streak by 21 games. Incidentally, the second-longest run was orchestrated by
Brett Jackson, who had his 29-game streak snapped against Grove City earlier this season.
Cook is also one of four Captains who rank in the top-50 in career points among all active players in the NCAA. Across all divisions,
Alex Brendes is 14th among current players with 266 points, while Auslander is 26th with 241. Meanwhile,
Drew Miller is 41st (223) and Cook is 50th (211).
This season, Cook is 26th nationally in points-per-game (5.22), while Miller and
Robby Adams are tied for 26th with five man-up goals.
Warner Cabaniss also sits in the top-50 in faceoff percentage (.635) and ground balls-per-game (8.44).
Similar to the Captains, Williams has faced a daunting slate of games this year. The Ephs defeated No. 17 Babson, 14-13, in the season opener on March 2. Additionally, the squad has setbacks against No. 2 RPI, No. 8 Union, and No. 14 Wesleyan.
So far this season, Williams has been led by Calvin Caputo, who leads the team with 25 points, including six in the squad's 17-11 win over Trinity on Saturday. Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, Patrick Gaul has 10 caused turnovers and 15 ground balls, while Matt Wetmore has a .497 save percentage and 13.17 goals-against-average.
Wednesday's meeting will mark the third battle between the two programs with CNU holding a 2-0 edge in the series. Last year, the Captains registered a 14-8 win. Jackson led the victors with five goals, while Auslander and Cook also added hat-tricks. On the other side, Caputo had a pair of points for the Ephs. Incidentally, Caputo and Auslander were former high school teammates at New Jersey's Princeton Day School.
Following the midweek showdown, Christopher Newport will open conference action at Montclair State on Saturday at noon.
