NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Facing the program's fourth straight top-20 test, the sixth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will host No. 13 Lynchburg on Saturday at 6 p.m. in a non-conference showdown at Jennings Family Stadium.
Following a three-game road swing, the Captains will return home for the first time in three weeks. Entering Saturday's bout, CNU sits at 6-2 on the season, including 4-0 at home. Meanwhile, Lynchburg is 3-3 with a 1-3 ledger on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. Additionally, Christopher Newport will provide a broadcast of the contest with Andy McGregor and Jake Myers calling all of the action. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
During the Mustang Classic last week, CNU split its two bouts after knocking off No. 4 Dickinson, 17-9, before falling to No. 10 St. Lawrence, 13-12, in overtime.
Andrew Cook led the squad with 12 points during the tournament, including seven goals. For that performance, he was celebrated as the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Along with Cook,
Kevin Miller and
Drew Miller both contributed nine points apiece. Kevin posted his first collegiate hat-trick against the fourth-ranked Red Devils, while his older brother came back with four strikes in the overtime battle against the Saints.
In addition to being the seventh set of brothers to play for the program, the Millers also became just the fourth pair to both score goals for the Captains. Incidentally, they joined that exclusive club alongside
Andrew Cook, whose older brother, Jack, scored five times as a long-pole defenseman during the program's Final Four run in 2021.
Equally effective on the offensive side of the ball this season,
Alex Brendes leads the Coastal Lacrosse Conference with 26 goals. Meanwhile, his .531 shooting percentage is 16th in the nation and sixth among players with at least 20 strikes.
Among other national-leaders,
Robby Adams is 22nd with five man-up tallies, while
Warner Cabaniss is 30th in ground balls-per-game (8.88) and 31st in faceoff percentage (.647). As a team, CNU is fourth in clearing percentage (.911), 15th in scoring offense (15.63 goals-per-game), and 15th in takeaways-per-game (13.38).
Similar to the Captains, Lynchburg is also coming off of an appearance at the Mustang Classic last week. The Hornets knocked off Stevenson, 15-9, on Friday before falling to Hamilton, 16-15, on Saturday. The squad has already played a daunting schedule in 2024 with setbacks at No. 1 Salisbury and No. 8 Gettysburg along with a 13-4 win over No. 19 Denison on March 10.
Headlining Lynchburg's attack, Jake Rust ranks 26th nationally with a 3.83 goals-per-game average. The senior already has four hat-tricks this year, including three straight appearances with at least four goals. Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Dom Zingo has 11 takeaways, while Tyler Hadley has a .512 save percentage and 10.47 goals-against-average.
In eight previous meetings between the two programs, both squads have registered four wins apiece. Last year, CNU notched a 14-13 overtime win at Lynchburg. Incredibly, for the third time in his career, Brendes landed the overtime winner against the Hornets after also sinking a pair of extra-time clinchers against Lynchburg in 2021. Eventually, he finished last year's battle with six points, including five goals.
After this weekend, Christopher Newport will remain at home on March 27 for a 4 p.m. showdown with No. 20 Williams.
