NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Putting on a record-setting showcase between the pipes,
Zac Hanway established a new program standard for career saves while leading the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team past Grove City, 16-9, on a cloud-covered Saturday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.
Against the Wolverines, Hanway pocketed 18 saves, which equaled his career-high and matched the eighth-most by a Captain in program history. Along the way, he also rewrote the record books with his 636th career stop. That eclipsed the previous school record of 635, which was set by former All-American Matt Hayden from 2014-17.
Aided by Hanway's work, Christopher Newport eventually finished the contest with 20 total saves. That tied the fourth-most in program history and the highest amount since CNU brushed aside 22 shots against Roanoke on February 27, 2019.
Also making history on Saturday,
Robby Adams netted his 100th career point after landing a man-up missile with four minutes remaining in regulation. He became the 18th Captain to reach that milestone.
In addition to the historic performers,
Alex Brendes led the Captains with five goals, while
Coby Auslander carved up the Wolverines with six points, including three assists. Meanwhile,
Andrew Cook handed out four helpers, and
Drew Miller contributed a hat-trick and two assists.
Continuing his domination at the dot,
Warner Cabaniss controlled possession while winning 18 of his 26 faceoffs. On the back end,
Ryan Young forced three turnovers, while
AJ Rosacker added a pair of strips to go along with his second collegiate goal.
With the victory, Christopher Newport improved to 5-0 on the season, while the setback dropped Grove City to 3-4.
Right from the start, the Captains set the tone on both ends of the field. On a failed clear by the visitors, Rosacker rode a Wolverine along the right sideline before punching the ball free. After Brendes collected the loose ball, Auslander opened the scoring with a bullet in the second minute.
Continuing to star in transition,
Jackson Shaw added a highlight-reel tally less than 30 seconds later. Orchestrating an incredible clear, the first-year phenom bounced off a pair of defenders on the defensive end before spinning through two more Wolverines near midfield. With Grove City's 10-man-ride breaking down, he bolted up the field and slammed from close range to steal a 2-0 edge.
Later in the period, the floodgates opened as Christopher Newport unloaded on GCC's back line. Brendes registered three goals in the middle of the stanza, including a gorgeous step-down screamer following a dodge by Cook. Moments later, Miller reached around the keeper on the doorstep after bursting up the left alley before Cook painted the right post with a sidewinder, which handed the hosts a 7-3 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
In the second period, the Wolverines clawed back into the game. Grove City went on a three-goal spurt, which cut CNU's lead down to one.
Looking to regain some momentum, Hanway clamped down on the back end. During a four-minute window, he came through with six saves, including a sensational stop from his knees during a man-down situation and a beautiful kick save on a worm-burner.
Following the defensive stand, Auslander took over on the other end. First, the fifth-year phenom capitalized on a feed from Miller for a dunk along the crease. Moments later, after the visitors were hit with a penalty, he found Adams cutting near the right post for a power-play goal, which gave the squad a 9-6 edge entering the break.
Picking up right where he left off in the second half, Auslander came through with a weaving clear as he spun through multiple midfielders. Keeping his head up while dodging the entire Grove City defense, he eventually found Miller all alone along the left side of the cage for CNU's 10th goal of the contest.
Continuing to put on a show in all facets of the game, Auslander pinballed off a pair of Wolverines before whipping a shot inside the post for his third goal. Then, in the waning moments of the period, he flashed his defensive chops on a clear attempt. Stalking his prey across the field, he eventually tracked the midfielder down and punched the ball free with a trail-check to kill off a Grove City response.
Meanwhile, Rosacker joined the fun on the offensive side. After a clean faceoff win by Cabaniss, the second-year star took an outlet along the right sideline. Facing a one-on-one match-up, he dipped under the shoulder of his defender, got a step of space, and capitalized on a long-pole goal, which gave CNU a 12-8 lead entering the fourth frame.
In the final stanza, Christopher Newport put the game on ice. Following his first-quarter hat-trick, Brendes came back with two more darts in the fourth. Kicking things off, he sidestepped his defender before spinning a scorcher around the hip of a second Wolverine on the left side of the field. Then, he polished off his afternoon with a skip-shot in the 51st minute.
Equally effective on the back end,
Aidan Wheeler came through with a huge ground ball to kill off a man-down situation, while Young tied an attacker in knots along the crease to thwart another extra-man rally later in the period. Hanway also added his 18th save with a sliding stop on a bullet along the left post.
With little left to prove, Cook ended the action with two late assists. First, he found Miller, who curled along the pipe and landed a low lefty laser with six minutes left in regulation. Then, driving home the final nail, Cook dropped a skip pass down low to Adams, who sunk a seed along the crease for his 100th career point.
Overall, Christopher Newport out-shot Grove City, 59-39, and held a 45-27 edge in ground balls. CNU also won 19 of the game's 29 faceoffs. Rosacker and Hanway both collected four ground balls, while
Mark Davison chipped in with a pair of takeaways, including a huge body-check along the cage in the third quarter.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the team heads to Massachusetts for a 6 p.m. showdown with No. 3 Tufts.
