No. 18 Christopher Newport Baseball Hosts Randolph-Macon and Marymount to Close Out the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team will get back to work on Thursday as the Captains  welcome in Randolph-Macon to Captains Park for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch. On Friday, the action continues as CNU will take on Marymont University, also at 3:00 p.m.

This week, Christopher Newport slipped to No. 18 in the D3baseball.com National Rankings and are now 8-5 overall on the season. Both Randolph-Macon and Marymount are receiving votes in this week's poll and the two teams matched up on Tuesday night with the Yellow Jackets capturing a 6-3 win over the Saints. Macon is now 7-3 overall this season while Marymount slipped to 11-2. 

The matchup against Randolph-Macon will be the 61st all-time meeting between the two programs in one of the most competitive rivalries for the Captains. The Yellow Jackets own a slight 32-28 advantage in the matchup after winning six straight against CNU. On Friday, CNU will be taking on Marymount for the 16th time, going 12-3 against the Saints since the program started in Northern Virginia in 2014.

The Captains are led by Scott Crosson, hitting .383, with a team-high 18 base hits. He has smacked six for extra bases with five doubles and one triple while scoring a team-best 17 runs scored. Senior Zach Dzarnowski and sophomore Josh Reinhold are leading the squad with 16 RBI while juniors Lincoln Lubsen and Doc Daniels have each delivered 15 runs batted in. 

Randolph-Macon is riding a four-game winning streak while being led by Aaron Lautenschlager hitting .488 this season. The junior infielder has a 1.145 OPS with 20 hits in 41 at-bats while adding seven walks for a .560 on-base percentage. Myles Webb is hitting .381 with 11 RBI including a team-high six extra-base hits. 

Marymount is off to a hot start this season, winning 11 of the first 13 games played. The Saints feature four players hitting .333 or better including former Captain Alec Reilly, who is exercising his CoVID-19 fifth-year eligibility at Marymount. Reilly has two home runs and a double in 11 starts this season for Marymount. Bobby Leitzel leads the squad with a .396 average and four extra-base hits this season. 

Following the two home games, Christopher Newport will make a return trip to Marymount on Tuesday, March 19 at 3:00 p.m.
