Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

CNU Falls, 5-4, in a Close Match Against Nationally-Ranked Washington and Lee

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday morning when No. 32 Washington and Lee earned a 5-4 win over the Captains (4-1) at the James River Country Club. The Generals improved to 4-1 overall after winning two of three doubles matches and splitting the singles pairings with the Captains.

The matchup hinged on several highly competitive battles that went to extra points. First, at No. 2 doubles, Ashton Legum and Edvard Porsmyr Hansen stretched their opponents to a tiebreaker before falling to Josh Rassin and Heys Parker, 8-7 (7-5). In singles, three matches went to a third set, including two CNU wins.

At No. 2 singles, sophomore Vincent Truong rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Will Kistler and at No. 3 singles, Ryan Monroe rebounded from a second set loss to take down James Kurani by a score of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. In perhaps the most competitive bout of the afternoon, Parker slipped by Legum 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-3.

In addition to Truong and Monroe's wins in singles play, the Captains also picked up the win at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. First, Gus Mitchell and Ahun Vodela paired up for an 8-5 win over Connor Coleman and James Kurani. In singles, Alex Seretis captured a 7-6, 6-0 win at No. 6.

Christopher Newport will look to rebound from their first loss of the year when they trek across country for the team's annual California spring break trip. The Captains will face UC Santa Cruz on March 3 before facing Whittier College on March 4. The trip will conclude with a matchup against Occidental on March 7.
