NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will continue its homestand this weekend when the Captains host Stevenson on Saturday at 4 p.m. before welcoming Ohio Wesleyan to Jennings Family Stadium for a 4 p.m. bout on Sunday.
Entering the weekend, CNU currently sits at 2-0 on the season, including 1-0 at home. Meanwhile, Stevenson is 1-0, and Ohio Wesleyan is 0-1.
For those fans unable to attend the games, Christopher Newport will provide live stats and a broadcast of both contests at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
CNU is coming off of a 26-12 victory over Berry in the squad's home opener last Saturday. During that tilt,
Drew Miller notched a career-high eight points, including seven goals. His seven tallies equaled the fourth-most by a Captain in school history, while his three man-up strikes matched the single-game program record.
Aided by his work on Saturday, Miller became the fifth Captain to reach 200 career points and the eighth to eclipse 100 career goals. For his historic outing, he was named the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week and earned a spot on the USILA National Team of the Week.
Along with Miller,
Alex Brendes contributed seven points against the Vikings, while
Andrew Cook handed out four assists. Defensively, CNU forced 29 turnovers, which marked the third-most in program history. Miller had four of those takeaways, while
AJ Rosacker had three. All three starting defensemen -
Brandon Young,
Ryan Young, and
Mark Davison - also forced two turnovers apiece.
So far this season, Christopher Newport ranks sixth in the NCAA with an average of 19 takeaways per game. The defense has also killed off 40 percent of the opposition's clear attempts, which ranks eighth in the nation.
On the other end of the field, CNU sits eighth in the country in scoring offense with a 20.50 goals-per-game rate. Individually, Miller is second in the NCAA with four man-up goals, while
Warner Cabaniss is sixth in ground-balls-per-game (13.00) and 16th in faceoff percentage (.755).
Stevenson opened its season last Saturday with a 15-10 win against Muhlenberg. Trailing 9-5 with less than 20 minutes remaining in regulation, the Mustangs scored 10 of the game's final 11 goals, including six straight during a five-minute window. Max Racich led the team with five points, while Conor Halpin went 22-for-28 on faceoffs.
So far this season, Halpin ranks 13th in the country with a .786 faceoff percentage, while Ryan Quinn is third on the national charts with an average of five takeaways per game. Justin Scorese also made 12 saves during his first outing of the year and helped anchor a man-down defense that brushed aside both of Muhlenberg's power-play opportunities.
Ohio Wesleyan kicked off its year with a hard-fought 10-8 setback at Grove City. Trailing by five entering the fourth quarter, the Battling Bishops scored the game's final three goals, but their comeback fell just short. Carson Geier and Wade Beckstrom both contributed hat-tricks, while Nathan George pocketed 10 saves and collected five ground balls.
Featuring a veteran-laden roster, Ohio Wesleyan returned the majority of the 2023 squad, which earned a share of the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship while finishing with a 12-5 record. Among the standouts on the roster, Spencer Amacher led last year's team with 34 goals, while Will Siegenthaler produced 50 points. Meanwhile, the defense features two-time All-League selection Wes Silver.
Sunday's game will be the first-ever meeting between CNU and Ohio Wesleyan. Meanwhile, the Captains hold a 3-2 edge in the series with Stevenson, including a 19-11 victory in Owings Mills, Maryland last year.
After this weekend, Christopher Newport will remain at home on March 2 for a noon battle with Grove City.
