SWANNANOA, N.C. -- Making her first career start for the nationally-ranked Captains, Christopher Newport rookie
Mia Wilson scored a game- and career-high 18 points while adding five assists to lead CNU to a 91-51 win at Warren Wilson College (1-24) to close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon. Winning the team's 41st consecutive road game, the Captains improved to 24-1 and will enter tournament play riding a twelve-game winning streak.
CNU led wire-to-wire in the regular season finale after opening the gam on a 13-0 run and never looking back. Freshman
Jessica Dornak, also making her first career start, cleaned up an offensive rebound and finished a put-back to start the scoring on the first possession. After a pair of turnovers,
Faith Henderson added a layup and
Nicole Timko splashed in a three-pointer to make it 7-0.
The Captains defense forced seven turnovers in the first 3:10 of the first quarter to establish the run, holding the home team to just a single field goal attempt while racing out to the early lead. Timko added another jumper in the lane and then had back-to-back steals for the defense.
Caitlin Crump got into the action with a finish after the first steal and then
Faith Henderson snagged a steal and a run-out to cap the 13-0 burst.
Warren Wilson got on the board with a pair of free throws with 6:40 showing on the first quarter clock, and got the lead down to single digits with a 10-4 run of their own, but the Captains answered with the final eight points of the period to take a 25-10 lead.
Timko kicked off another strong start to the second quarter with her second three-pointer of the game. Moments later,
Mia Wilson snapped in her first of two triples in the game, kickstarting her impressive overall performance with a three assisted by
McKenna Snively. Wilson then set up
Ashley Steadman for two before burying her second three-pointer to give the Captains a 26-points edge, 40-14, with 4:29 left in the half.
CNU finished strong again, scoring eight of the last ten points of the quarter led by Timko. The sophomore guard crashed the boards and hauled in three late rebounds that led to Christopher Newport points. At the break, the lead was 31 as the Captains rushed out to a 52-21 advantage.
The lead would grow to as many as 38 in the third quarter and as high as 42 in the game when
Caitlin Crump tickled the twine with a three-pointer late in the fourth quarter. As a team, CNU shot well from the field by knocking down 50 percent (36-72) of their attempts. The Captains defense forced 32 Warren Wilson turnovers and scored 45 points off of giveaways. Crump led the charge with four steals while Snively added three and four more Captains snagged a pair of thefts.
Wilson finished the game with 18 points on 4-of-7 shooting including an 8-of-10 performance from the free-throw line. She was one of five CNU players in double figures, marking the second time this season the Captains have accomplished that feat. Timko poured in 17 points with a trio of three-pointers while Dornak added 14 points on 6-of-10 from the field. Tied with 13 points apiece,
Caitlin Crump and
Ashley Steadman rounded out the group of five double figure scorers for CNU.
Christopher Newport is well-positioned for the top seed in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference, which will not be announced officially until Monday, but the Captains have established a commanding lead in the Massey Ratings, by which the seeding is determined. The semifinals will then be played at the same time on Friday, February 23, followed by a 7:00 p.m. tip for the championship game on Saturday, February 24.
