No. 8 Captains Capture Steel Club Classic Championship With 88-63 Win Over Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Rookie Sarah Pritz scored a career-high 16 points for the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team and helped power the Captains (12-1) to a dominant 88-63 win over host Moravian University (2-8) on Sunday afternoon. CNU captured the Steel Club Classic Championship behind MVP Camille Malagar and All-Tournament Team selection Hannah Orloff after a pair of wins at Johnston Hall and will start the New Year riding a five-game winning streak.

Malagar filled the stat sheet on Sunday with nine points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists and managed another 10 points and five assists in just 11 minutes in Monday's championship game. Orloff, who was the MVP of the Captains Clash prior to the holiday break, finished the two-day trip with 19 points, 11 rebounds, four steals, three blocks, and an impressive .727 shooting percentage.

In Monday's matchup against Moravian, Pritz connected on six of her seven attempts from the field including a pair of three-pointers. She was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line and added five rebounds, an assist, and a blocked shot in the breakout performance.

Taking on the Greyhounds, the Captains got four players in double figures for the first time since game three of this season when four scored 10 or more against Averett University. In addition to Pritz' season-high, CNU got 11 points from Hannah Orloff and 10 out of Camille Malagar and Mia Wilson.

CNU shot 49.3 percent from the field (34-69) and knocked down seven three-pointers. The Captains' defense forced 41 turnovers, reaching 40+ for the third time this season, and recorded 23 steals. Senior Alexia Lindsey led the defensive effort with five steals while Emma O'Connor, Caitlin Crump, and Hailey Kellogg each added four apiece.

Defense reigned in the early stages of the opening quarter as both teams combined for only ten points in the first five minutes before the Captains caught fire the remainder of the period. Orloff connected on a layup through contact for a traditional three-point play after an inside feed from O'Connor and triggered a 16-2 run that saw the Captains open up a double-digit lead.

Orloff's and-one was followed immediately by a steal from rookie Madison McKenzie and the freshman laid it in on the run out. After Moravian got a basket it was ten straight points from the Captains as Orloff finished again and O'Connor scored four straight with a pair of free-throws and a fast-break layup. The run continued with a driving layup from Elizabeth Creed and another bucket by Orloff, giving her seven points in the early burst.

The Captains carried an 11-point lead into the second quarter after Lindsey added a tough layup and Kellogg added a pair from the charity stripe to give CNU a 23-12 advantage. Junior McKenna Snively splashed in a three-pointer on the first Captains possession of the second quarter and CNU was off to the races with another big run. With the score at 27-16, Christopher Newport put together another roll as they scored 17 of the next 19 points to open up a 44-18 lead.

Malagar led the way this time with six points in the run while Wilson added a three-pointer and a layup for five points. O'Connor added four points from the field and Pritz went 2-for-2 at the line to wrap up the second quarter blitz.  Rookie Aliyah Elliott chipped in a free-throw at the end of the half and the visitors took a 45-21 lead into the locker room.

The Captains held onto the large lead and inflated it to 31 by the end of the third quarter. Pritz buried a triple at the buzzer off the third assist from Kellogg and found a groove from there. The freshman was 4-for-4 in the fourth quarter with a three-pointer and three layups, including two stickbacks on offensive rebounds.

The Captains will return to action with back-to-back home games this weekend including a Friday evening against Stevenson University at 4:00 p.m. CNU will then host Haverford College at 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 5.
