NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport closed out the regular season with a 3-1 victory over Averett on Saturday night at the Freeman Center. The Captains received 11 kills from
Alyssa Dozier and a double-double from setter
Alyssa Vitale, finishing the season with a 22-9 record and momentum heading into the postseason.
First Set
CNU trailed early but kept the set competitive thanks to two kills each from
Alli Pratt,
Macy Burk, and Dozier. Despite the Captains' efforts, Averett used timely runs to secure a 25-18 victory.
Second Set
Averett jumped out to a 9-5 lead, but CNU chipped away with contributions from Burk, who delivered a kill and an ace. The Captains surged ahead with a decisive 4-0 run, highlighted by a kill and block from Dozier and capped by a
Carley Coghill kill for a 21-19 lead. Dozier brought up set point, and an Averett error sealed the 25-22 win for CNU.
Third Set
Early kills from Dozier and Burk kept the Captains close before
Megan James and Burk helped CNU grab a 10-8 lead. Dozier tallied five kills in the set, including one for set point. Averett rallied to lead 26-25, but a kill by
Samantha Dorn and back-to-back aces from
Kensie Price lifted CNU to a 28-26 victory.
Fourth Set
CNU dominated the fourth set, opening with a 5-0 run fueled by two blocks from Dozier. The Captains' defense shined, recording four blocks and holding Averett to a -.133 hitting percentage. With a commanding lead, back-to-back kills from Dozier and Dorn set up match point. Dozier teamed with Burk for a block to clinch the 25-12 win.
