MONTCLAIR, N.J. - Christopher Newport University plays its final road game of the year on Saturday, as the Captains travel to the Garden State to take on the Red Hawks of Montclair State University. The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) battle is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. at Sprague Field on the MSU campus.
The Captains are 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, while the Hawks are 3-5 and 1-4 in the NJAC.
Paul Crowley's squad has won three straight games, and are coming off a 45-7 home win last week over William Paterson. MSU lost at Rowan last Saturday in overtime, 16-10.
"We're looking forward to another great challenge this week," Crowley said. "We've had some exciting battles with Montclair State over the years, and I expect this to be another hard-fought game. We've got to carry over the effort we've shown the last few weeks, limit our mistakes, and keep focused on finishing strong. This is all about our seniors, who have given so much to the program over their careers."
In the victory last week, Christopher Newport built a 38-0 halftime lead, and then coasted to the 45-7 victory over the Pioneers of William Paterson. The triumph at TowneBank Stadium was CNU's third straight, and also marked the fifth straight loss for the Pioneers. The Captains scored six touchdowns, with five of the six coming on the ground. CNU had two players rush for 100 yards or more for the first time since 2013, as the Captains registered 283 rushing yards and 342 total yards in the victory. Junior
Gunner White (100 yards on 15 carries with three scores) and sophomore
Jordin Lennon (174 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns) led the ground attack while sophomore quarterback
Connor Barry also threw for 59 yards and a score. For his efforts, Lennon was named the Offensive Player of the Week in the NJAC.
Christopher Newport and Montclair State have split eight previous meetings in the all-time series. The Captains are 2-2 all-time at Sprague Field, and 2-2 at TowneBank Stadium vs. the Red Hawks. Last year, MSU recorded a 19- 14 victory over the Captains at TowneBank Stadium, snapping a two-game winning streak in the series for CNU. The all-time results have the Captains out-scoring the Red Hawks, 136-134, in the eight previous games.
