Captains Close Out Season at Home with CNU Invitational

Christopher Newport is set to close out its regular season with three home matches at the Freeman Center, hosting Mary Washington, Berry, and Averett. The Captains, who have won five of their last seven matches, look to build on their recent momentum and finish strong ahead of postseason play.

Match Details

The Captains open the weekend on Thursday, November 7, at 6 p.m. against Mary Washington. They will then take on Berry on Friday, November 8, at 7 p.m., and finish the weekend on Saturday, November 9, at 1 p.m. against Averett. All matches will be streamed live on CNU All Access.

Last Time Out

Christopher Newport highlighted last weekend with a three-set sweep over No. 25 Salisbury, amassing 74 digs in one of their best defensive performances of the season. The Captains followed up with a season-high 107 digs in a five-set match against Marymount, their highest total since their match against Washington & Lee last year. Noelle Starr surpassed 2,000 career digs, becoming only the third player in CNU history to reach that mark. She also moved to second in program history with 2,006 digs.

5 - Saturday will mark Senior Day for CNU. The Captains will honor five seniors before the match: Noelle Starr, Julia Gleason, Alyssa Vitale, Macy Burk, and Kyla McIntyre.

Series History

The Captains lead the series 19-29 against Mary Washington after sweeping the Eagles on the road on October 12, where they hit a season-best .371. CNU trails in the series against Berry, 2-4, last facing them in a tight five-set battle last year. Against Averett, CNU holds a 46-33 advantage, winning 23 consecutive matches in a series that dates back to 1983.

Scouting the Eagles

Mary Washington comes into the weekend with a 12-14 record. Recently, they lost matches to fellow conference members CNU, Salisbury, and UC Santa Cruz in the C2C Invitational. Emily Flamm has been a key player for the Eagles, contributing both offensively and defensively with 31 aces and 56 blocks this season.

Scouting the Vikings

Berry stands at 12-11 this season, winning four of their last five and finishing second in the SAA with a 9-3 conference record. Setter Lindsey MacDiarmid has been versatile for the Vikings, tallying 609 assists along with 27 aces, 160 digs, and 39 blocks.

Scouting the Cougars

Averett is 12-15 overall and 6-6 in the ODAC, placing seventh in the league. Emma Nash leads the Cougars in kills (260), aces (43), and blocks (64).
