No. 5 CNU Women's Basketball Turns in Dominant Defensive Showing in 86-28 Win at Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Recording the sixth most steals in program history and the second most since 1994, the fifth-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball utilized a dominating defensive performance to roll past Greensboro College (2-4) on Tuesday night, 86-28. The Captains snagged 33 steals led by a career-high performance from junior guard Hailey Kellogg with six while ten different CNU players snagged multiple thefts in the game.

With the win, Christopher Newport improved to 7-0 on the season and heads into the Thanksgiving break having forced 35 or more turnovers in all but one of their first seven games. The CNU defense held Greensboro to single digits in all four quarters and the suffocating press forced 47 turnovers in the game. Once in the half-court, the home team could only muster 23.3 percent (10-43) shooting in the game against the vaunted CNU defense.

The Captains also flexed their muscle inside, outrebounding Greensboro by nearly 30 boards in the game, 63-34. CNU hauled in more offensive rebounds, with 35, than the Pride had total caroms in the contest. Leading the effort on the glass was freshman Sarah Pritz, who narrowly missed her first career double-double with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

In the game, Christopher Newport set a program record with 39 three-point attempts. CNU took 93 shots overall, marking the most recorded in a game by the Captains since taking 95 at Ferrum on January 21, 1994.

The wire-to-wire victory started with Christopher Newport opening up a 21-6 lead on a transition three-pointer from Camille Malagar on the left wing followed by a mid-range jumper by the fifth-year senior. She got a pass from her point guard, Gabbi San Diego, and buried the triple to lead by 13 and then added another bucket on the next possession. Emma O'Connor closed out the quarter with a terrific offensive rebound and putback. She had her defender on her hip, faked inside, and spun back to the glass for the stickback bucket.

CNU carried a 24-9 lead into the second quarter when the Captains turned to the freshman class. Katerina Dakos slammed in a three-pointer to start the period and added another jumper one possession later. Pritz had four straight points with a short jumper int he paint and a second-chance layup. Madison McKenzie then poured in a three and Pritz added another bucket to boost the lead to 24. The freshman class scored 16 straight points for the Captains when Ella Negron capped the run with a jumper after a steal by McKenzie. Sophomore Mia Wilson finished out the second quarter scoring with a three-pointer and a pair of free-throws to head into the locker room up 45-16.

After halftime, Christopher Newport got three-pointers from San Diego, Kellogg, and McKenna Snively to build the lead to 40 with 6:13 remaining. Sydney Sherman also added a fast-break bucket after a steal and Hannah Orloff knocked in a jumper in the paint to cap a 13-0 run to start the period.

The Captains closed out the game with a 58-point win after outscoring the Pride, 41-12, in the second half. Bench scoring continues to be impressive as Christopher Newport scored 66 points from the reserves on Tuesday night. CNU ranked third in the nation coming into the game with 51.8 points per game from the reserves.

In the lopsided victory, no CNU player finished in double figures as the balanced offense saw 16 of the 18 players get into the scoring column. Pritz led the way with nine points while McKenzie, Wilson, and Sherman each added eight points. Kellogg filled the stat sheet with five points, four rebounds, two assists, and six steals.

Christopher Newport will return to action this Saturday, November 30 at Division I Liberty University. The game will be an exhibition for the Captains but is an official game for the Flames. Live stats will be available online and a live stream will be presented on ESPN+ for subscribers. Following the trip to Lynchburg, CNU will take on Southern Virginia on Wednesday, December 4.
