Second-Ranked Women's Soccer Makes History With 12-0 Win Over John Jay in NCAA Tournament Opening Round

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In one of the most impressive displays of dominance in program history, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship after a 12-0 drubbing of John Jay College in the first round on Saturday. The Captains (16-1-2) set a host of records, including the program scoring record with 35 points, as 11 different players found the back of the net, also a new record for Christopher Newport.

A dozen goals lit up the scoreboard by the end of the match with four in the first half -- including a spurt of three straight in less than 90 seconds -- and eight more in the second. The eight goal second half ties the program mark set against Averett (Sept 23, 2000) and Southern Virginia (October 4, 2016) for goals in a single period.

Fifth-year senior Corinne Kulik scored twice in the game but 10 others each chipped in a single goal. Previously, the Captains' record for different goal scorers was nine, set in the same Averett game and matched against Mary Baldwin on October 27, 2007. When sophomore Alex Dalakis connected in the 81st minute, CNU set the record with 10, and QB Osuna distanced themselves from the previous mark with another strike to become 11, in the 90th minute.

With all the fireworks and the host of contributors in the opening round victory, it was a familiar connection that started the day and held up as the game-winning goal. Just 7:10 into the game, junior Hanna Heaton set a new program record for assists in a season when she teed up a perfect pass across the box toward the back post for fifth-year senior Emma Ricci. The Winchester, Va. native connected on the header for her sixth goal of the season including her team-leading fourth gamewinner. This season, Heaton and Ricci have combined for five goals including three with Ricci on the receiving end.

After taking the early lead, CNU poured on three more goals in a stretch of just 1:23 between the 12th and 15th minutes. On a restart, senior All-American defender Reanna Slater delivered a long ball from midfield into the box where junior midfielder Kyleigh Gough lay in wait on the far post. Wasting no time with the finish, Gough powered home the score on the left side of the goal. Before the Bloodhounds could even begin to reset, the Captains connected on another goal just 24 seconds later. Ricci slipped a pass to Ellie Cox, who then turned and worked around a pair of defenders. After clearing enough space, she unleashed a blazing drive into the left side of the netting. The third strike in the short spurt came on another restart as Heaton delivered a pair of hard shots into the waiting John Jay defense. A ricochet set Kulik up for her first goal of the match when she slid a low shot under the keeper on the left side.

Carrying a 4-0 lead into halftime, the Captains cozied into form on their home field in the second half. Goals came in bunches, with three more in the first 15 minutes of the second stanza including the second half of Kulik's brace. First, it was Lexi Hazelgrove on goal number five with a highlight-reel combination before the shot. Gough played a low pass up the right side of the field and Alex Devers played a magical heel flick into the center of the field to set Hazelgrove free for an open shot on goal. From long distance, the sophomore blistered an indefensible bullet into the upper 90 for the score. Then, Kulik capped her day off another terrific long pass by Gough to set her free down the right side. Kulik dribbled into the box and powered a heavy shot off the goalkeepers hands and into the left side.

Now leading by six, the Captains were only halfway through with the explosive offensive performance. In the 60th minute, Devers added her own strike to her assist from earlier on. After a John Jay defender saved the ball from going out of bounds, Dalakis ripped possession away and delivered a pass into the box. Devers caught a spinning one-timer into the net off the pass from the left side.

As the reserves started to fill the field, the Captains got the third goal of the season from sophomore AP Webb in the 66th minute. Rookie Ellie Diehl set up the strike just one goal before scoring her own on a free kick at the start of the 69th minute. Diehl picked up her first collegiate goal on a restart from about 25 yards in the center of the field, launching a shot by the goalkeeper to make it 9-0.

In the final 20 minutes, CNU scored three more times as Brooke White, Dalakis, and Osuna rounded out the overall effort. Rookie Grace Shifflett earned an assist on White's score with a pass across the goalmouth from the right side. White trapped the pass and fired home her second goal of the season. Molly Seventko added an assist on Dalakis' goal with a cross from the right and the sophomore played the chest-high pass into the goal on the back post. Finally, Osuna cleaned up the final play of the game when she collected a loose ball and fired home her first collegiate goal.

In total, CNU scored more points (35) than ever before while tying the record for assists (11) and ranking second all-time in goals scored in a game (12). The well-balanced performance saw 15 different players log at least one goal or one assist in the game, besting the previous mark of 14 set against Wesley on September 30, 2017 and setting a new NCAA Tournament record for the team after one logging one more than CNU did against Staten Island on November 10, 2018.

Heaton, the leading scorer for Christopher Newport, was remarkably not one of the 11 who found the back of the net in Saturday's contest but she did pick up two more assists. With 15 helpers in her second season at CNU, Heaton has now set a new program record after Carly Utterback set the mark at 13 in 2012 that was matched twice by Carson Pokorny and Maxine Borris in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

In goal, Amy Sidaway played the first 45 minutes and senior Jaya Daniel closed out the shutout with one save. On the field, no player saw more than 68 minutes of action and of the 24 players that saw action, all played at least 22 minutes in the win. Starting her 86th consecutive game, senior Nyah Savage moved into a tie for second all-time with CNU legend Riley Cook (2021-24) for the most starts in program history.

The record-breaking performance gives CNU an NCAA Tournament victory for the eighth consecutive year. It is the ninth time the Captains will advance to the second round.

On Sunday, the second-ranked CNU women's soccer team will host Vassar College in the second round at 3:00 p.m. The Brewers advanced after a 1-0 win against St. Mary's (Md.) in the other first round game played at Captains Field on Saturday.
