NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After a 2-0 start to the season on the West Coast, the fifth-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will welcome Averett University (0-1) on Wednesday night for the home opener at the Freeman Center. Tip-off against the Cougars is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. as the Captains face off against Averett for the 75th time in program history.
For fans unable to attend in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available online. Links to both can be found at the top of this page and on the women's basketball schedule at CNUsports.com.
The Captains were led in the opening weekend by sophomore guard
Mia Wilson averaging 12.5 points per game while knocking down 58.3 percent of her shots. She buried six three-pointers in the first two games including four against the host Loggers of Puget Sound in game number two. Sophomore
Elizabeth Creed has added 10.5 points per game with a team-high 14 rebounds.
CNU opened the season with an 83-48 win against Willamette and added an 81-57 victory against Puget Sound to start 2-0. The Captains will be taking on Averett for the 75th time in one of the longest standing series in women's basketball history. Christopher Newport is 64-9 all-time against the Cougars including a 13-1 record since 2008.
Heading into Wednesday night's matchup, the Captains will be looking to restart a home winning streak after suffering the team's first setback in the Freeman Center in a record 54 consecutive games. Prior to a second round NCAA Tournament loss to Johns Hopkins last year, the Captains had registered 54 straight wins at home starting against William Peace on December 16, 2018 through March 1, 2024 against Mount Saint Vincent.
The CNU dominance at home extends to a perfect 11-0 record in home openers under head coach
Bill Broderick and the Captains have won 16 straight home openers dating back to 2003-04.
Averett will head to CNU after opening the year against Centre College last Friday, falling to the Colonels, 73-57. In that game, Emma Jones (12 pts) and DaiShaundria Giggetts (10 pts) led the Cougars in double figures. Giggetts also tied for the team-high with eight rebounds while Zariia America also hauled in eight caroms.
Following the matchup against the Cougars, the Captains will hit the road for five in a row away from home. CNU will travel to the Jean Edge Classic hosted by N.C. Wesleyan on November 16-17 where they will face Johnson & Wales and No. 6 Johns Hopkins.
