NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University and Virginia Wesleyan University have met 90 times over the years in men's basketball, and the rivalry will be renewed Wednesday night in Virginia Beach. Both squads are 2-0 heading into the battle at the Batten Center, and tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
John Krikorian's squad, ranked fifth in the country in the pre-season poll from D3hoops.com, won both games in Rocky Mount, N.C. last weekend in the Roger Taylor Invitational. CNU opened the new year with a win over Greensboro College Saturday, and then downed host North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday. Fifth-year senior All-American
Jahn Hines led the Captains by scoring 44 points in the victories, with 31 coming Sunday vs. the Bishops. Hines is now tenth on the CNU all-time scoring list, and was named the Player of the Week in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference.
Virginia Wesleyan opened the year by beating Ripon and Mary Washington to win the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament at the Batten Center. Senior Omari DeVeaux has led the Marlins so far, averaging 14.5 points per game over VWU's first two triumphs.
The Captains hold a 52-38 edge in the long-running series, which dates back to January of 1968, but the Marlins have won the last two and three of the last four meetings. The squads met last season on December 14th at the Freeman Center, and the Marlins handed the Captains one of just two home losses suffered all season with a 74-68 verdict.
