NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
Christopher Newport University will be looking for its third straight victory on Saturday, as the Captains host the Pioneers of William Paterson University. Kickoff time is set for 1:00 p.m. at TowneBank Stadium.

The Captains are 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), while the Pioneers are 1-6 overall and 0-3 in league play. Paul Crowley's squad is coming off a 32-21 road win last week at Kean University, while WPU lost for the fourth straight week, a 39-6 setback to Montclair State.

"We can't afford to lose our focus," Crowley said as his team prepared to play the Pioneers. "You can't look past anyone, and being in the NJAC means you're going to get a tough test every week. I know William Paterson will be well coached and ready to battle us, and we've got to stand up to the challenge."

Sophomore quarterback Connor Barry has continued to post big numbers for the Captains, and has now thrown 12 touchdown passes with only one interception. Barry is averaging almost 216 yards per game passing, and his top receiver, junior Colin Hart, has caught eight scoring strikes and is averaging almost 106 yards per game receiving. CNU's offense is now averaging 31.6 points per game, and has gone over the 30-point mark in four games this season.

CNU's defense has also excelled, as the Captains have recorded 19 sacks in the first seven games. Sophomore rover Noah Martin leads the defensive unit with a team-high 61 tackles, including 33 solo stops.

Christopher Newport and WPU will be meeting for the ninth time, and the Captains hold a 7-1 edge in the series. CNU has won the last two games, most recently a 33-13 victory last year in Wayne, N.J.

The Pioneers are coached by former NFL defensive back Shaun Williams, who is in his third season as the team's Head Coach. In his first year at the helm in 2022, he led the Pioneers to a five-win season to mark the most victories in a campaign for WPU since 2012. Williams, a UCLA graduate, spent nine years in the NFL (1998-2006), reaching Super Bowl XXXV as a member of the New York Giants, before joining the Pioneer coaching staff in 2009 as a part-time Assistant Coach.

Saturday's game is the fourth of five home games this season for the Captains. CNU will end the regular season on the road next week at Montclair State University (2:00 p.m. in Montclair, N.J.), and then host the College of New Jersey at TowneBank Stadium on Friday, November 15th, at 6:00 p.m.

Tickets are available for Saturday's game, and will go on sale at TowneBank Stadium Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. Gates will open at 12 noon.

All Captains games are broadcast live on the Home of the Captains, Xtra 99.1 FM and CNUsports.com. The pre-game show Saturday will begin at 12:30 p.m. Links are provided at the top of this story to the live video of the game, as well as the Live Stats and the full CNU game notes package.
